two MORE bowl games this year gives teams that are 2-5 in conference (USF) a chance to go bowling and also brings us some terrible and unappealing match ups.
Since we all clamor for a playoff in college football, we have devised our own "Worst College Bowl Playoff Bracket" to determine the worst bowl in college football this postseason.
We have decided to break this down into four regions with four games each. The "Sleeper Sixteen of College Bowls."
Join us as we set our brackets up and take the time to vote for which match up/bowl you find the least attractive, in each reagion. Next week we will narrow it down to the final four!
West Region:
Texas Bowl - Rice vs. Western Michigan. Luckily this match up is on the NFL Network so it won't interrupt actual sports programing on your basic cable provider.
New Mexico Bowl - Nothing says excitement more than #5 WAC, Colorado State vs. #5 MWC, Fresno State in cold Albuquerque, NM. Could be worse. Imagine New Mexico/New Mexico State.
Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl - Rematch of a Hurricane Ike displaced game played Sept. 13th between Air Force and Houston in rainy Dallas. A game that included ZERO pass completions for Air Force.
Insight.com Bowl - (7-5) Kansas vs. (7-5) Minnesota. The Golden Gophers finished the season 0 for 4 including embarrassing home losses to Michigan (29-6) and Iowa (55-0).
South Region:
R + L Carriers New Orleans Bowl: (6-6) Southern Miss. vs. (8-4) Troy. The victor gets the "Best SEC Cupcake Trophy."
Independence Bowl: (6-6) Northern Illinois vs. (7-5) La Tech in Shreveport, LA. Writing more would be a waste of characters. Definitely the number one seed in our books.
PapaJohns.com Bowl: (6-6) NC State vs. (7-5) Rutgers. The Bracket's sixteen seed. Birmingham, AL gave this one a line.
Autozone Liberty Bowl: No matter how much Autozone and the Liberty Bowl Committee have paid "The Worldwide Leader" to shill the game this year, (6-6) Kentucky isn't turning on any dials outside of Lexington.
North Region:
EagleBank Bowl: The Nation's Capital kicks off bowl season at 11:00am EST on the 20th. That's right 11am! That is 8am PST! Whoever talked Navy into trading sunny San Diego for this bowl tie-in should be given the award for "Salesman of the Year."
Motor City Bowl: FAU vs. Central Michigan. Since when did a 6-6 record in the Sunbelt become good enough to be bowl eligible?
International Bowl: Buffalo vs. U Conn. Yeah Buffalo is a cute story this year, but who cares about a bowl played in Canada, AFTER New Year's Day.
Roady's Humanitarian Bowl: (7-5) Maryland vs. (7-5) Nevada. Four words: Boise. December. Smurf Turf. Plus we guess the selection committee forgot that Maryland lost to Middle Tenn State and Nevada was defeated by the Aggies of New Mexico State.
East Region:
majicJack St. Petersburg Bowl: (6-6) Memphis vs. (7-5) USF. Does anyone know anyone who plays for Memphis? USF is an impressive 2-5 in Big East play.
Outback Bowl: South Carolina vs. Iowa. Doesn't quite scream Tennessee/Wisconsin of years past.
Champs Sports Bowl: It took Wisconsin three missed extra point tries and overtime to defeat FCS Cal Poly at home. Florida State is 6-4 without its two FCS victories.
Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl: Boston College vs. (6-6) Vanderbilt. This is interesting if you like to watch Vanderbilt continue to drive its season off a cliff. The Commodores are 0-2 vs. the ACC. BC should present a bigger challenge than Duke and Wake.
Editor's note: The Sheraton Hawaii and Pioneer Las Vegas Bowls just missed this list and only because they are played in actual tourist destinations. Look for NBC to make a run at ESPN for broadcast rights to another Notre Dame defeat.

LONDON: A fire broke out early Monday at one of Britain's biggest children's hospitals, injuring four firefighters and forcing the hospital's cardic wing to evacuate.
The fire began on the 5th floor in the cardiac wing at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Patients there were moved to another part of the hospital. No patients or staff were injured in the fire, the hospital reported.
Patients scheduled for outpatient procedures Monday were sent home, the hospital's chief executive, Dr. Jane Collins, said.
The firefighters were transported to another hospital for treatment and the fire was under control by late morning.
A gas cylinder is suspected to have been involved in the fire, although the exact cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Dems, Kaine, fight back against GOP faith attacks
House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith and Grayson Republican Del. Bill Carrico are promising a pitched legislative fight in next year’s Virginia General Assembly to overturn a Virginia State Police policy crafted in response to a ruling from the conservative Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals from the summer banning sectarian prayers at government-sanctioned meetings and events. And they’re not above using the fight to take a shot at Gov. Tim Kaine, a former Catholic missionary and key surrogate for Democratic Party presidential nominee, in the meantime.

Hello once more from the wide world of sports. Yes football season has just started and maybe one day I will get to finish my AFC Preview (probably not because I am just too lazy to analyze the remaining 16 teams). However, with the NY Football Giants effectively embarrassing the Washington Redskins last night in East Rutherford, I would like to present you the ten most compelling story lines for the upcoming season and my thought provoking/dead-on/genius analysis.
1. What will Brett Farve do in Jets green?
Nobody really knows what to expect from Farve. Will he be the Brett from last year when he led the Packers to a 13-3 record with a berth in the NFC Championship game or the gunslinger from 2005 and 2006 who had a 38:47 TD to INT ratio and looked more finished than grandmas overcooked Christmas turkey? I believe he will be a mixture of the two. The Jets will be better, maybe even compete for a playoff spot, but nothing really beyond that. And really, its not what he does during the season, its what he does after that is important for THE Brett Farve Network/ESPN.
2. Can Aaron Rodgers lead the Packers to the playoffs?
Ladies and Gentleman, YES HE CAN! Aaron Rodgers, if you remember was a pretty good quarterback at Cal and was expected to be a top ten pick. He then fell to the Packers and was lucky enough to rot on the bench for a few years until he was ready. Well, he is now ready. Look for the mountain man to put up good numbers this year as he leads the Packers back to the NFC Championship game (which he will also lose).
3. Can the Patriots go unbeaten again this season?
No. I can not be more emphatic in my answer. I have always believed in Karma and I trust that the Football G-Ds are going to seek revenge on the New England Patriots for running up the score and cheating their way to glory. They are still the best team in the AFC East, but the gap has closed significantly. And lets be honest, this team is a ticking time bomb. Lets look at the checklist: Over-inflated ego head coach (check!), celebrity QB (check!), aging defense (check), and one crazy drama driven receiver (CHECK!). The Giants exposed the Patriots in the Super Bowl for having an offensive line that was prone to pressure. And this rattled Tom Brady. I think teams are going to realize that giving him time to pick you apart is a bad idea. As long as you limit his throws to underneath routes to the TEs and Wes Welker, they are beatable because this team is one-dimensional on offense (paging Laurence Maroney). Also, Randy Moss is a head case waiting to happen. Once he stops catching all of those touchdowns, he is going to go into crazy Randy Moss mode. I cant wait to see/hear/read about Bill Simmons crying about the downfall of the Patriots (and Sports guy, how about you write about something other than your Boston teams. I thought you were supposed to be a national columnist.)
4. Will the Cowboys actually win a playoff game this year?
No, they wont. Tony Romo, while a nice quarterback, doesnt seem to have the testicular fortitude to will his team to a tough late season victory. They have the greatest collection of talent south of the Mason-Dixon line and yet they assume that because they are so good, they should just be handed the championship. Gentlemen, you must earn this trophy. That is why teams who play hard every game win it (Steelers and Giants come to mind). They will be good again, but they just arent tough enough to win games in the playoffs.
5. Will the New Orleans Saints turn into the 2006 Saints because of Hurricane Gustav?
I think the better question is will the Saints home field be under attack every hurricane season and force them to turn into football nomads? I believe the Saints will be much better this year. I really like their skill position players and their division is up for grabs. They will probably have a season similar to the 2006 post-Katrina season, so, yes, they will turn into the 2006 Saints.
6. Why are the Giants getting no respect after winning the Superbowl last year?
Because everyone thought that last year was a fluke. That they were lucky to be there. However, they proved them wrong but are still getting the same treatment this season. This year the experts see the loss of Michael Strahan to retirement and Osi Umenyiora to injury are too great to overcome. I say hogwash. This team is loaded at running back and the defensive line. Eli Manning is ready to make a jump to elite status and Plaxico Burress is a top five wide receiver. By the end of the season, the pundits will all be saying how the Giants came out of nowhere again this year. Maybe then they will stop underestimating the number one team from New York.
7. Will any teams flirt with losing all 16 games?
Yes and they will be the Falcons, Dolphins, Ravens, and St. Louis. Each of these teams has glaring holes and so many issues that I could not possibly name them all, so I will just same one from each team. The Falcons and Ravens are starting rookie quarterbacks (more on that later) who are going to wish they had never been drafted. St. Louis has one of the worst head coaches of all time in Scott Linehan and the Dolphins just plain suck. Now, if any of you have watched the show, this past episode, I called my colleague Justin Fensterman an idiot (among many other things) because he said the Dolphins had a chance at making the playoffs. Theoretically, yes they do, but in reality, where most of us live, they have no chance in hell in winning more than 4 games this year. None of these teams will win more than 5 games this year and the Falcons and Dolphins will battle it out again for who is the worst team in all of football.
8. Which rookie quarterback is going to have a better season: Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco?
While neither of these players are going to be very good this year, I believe that Matt Ryan is going to have a better year statistically and Joe Flacco will win one or two more games (I know, Im taking the middle ground, sorry). Both are going to throw more interceptions than touchdowns and have a completion percentage hover around 55 percent. But Matt Ryan also has better receivers (Roddy White is better than all of the Ravens wide outs put together) and Michael Turner is going to have a breakout year. He is in a better position to play a little better than Flacco right now. Long term, lets just hope they dont develop David Carr Syndrome.
9. How much will Peyton Mannings removed bursa sac affect his game?
I dont really know because Im not much a medical guy. But if he says he is fine, I am going to take his word for it. I think that he is the best quarterback in the game and I am still picking him in fantasy drafts. What concerns me more about the Colts is the injury bug that still hasnt left them. Now Jeff Saturday, their all-pro center is out and its going to be tough to replace him. However, Peyton will be fine and I look forward to the Colts reclaiming their status as the class of the AFC.
10. How crazy is Chad Ocho Cinco?
Britney Spears Crazy. Who changes their name from Chad Johnson to Chad Ocho Cinco? He has literally gone into the deep end. But I feel bad for him. He obviously does not have the pysche to withstand the daily pressures of playing football and being held to certain expectations. There was a reason the Bengals didnt trade him this summer: nobody wanted his crazy ass on their team. And the only team that did want him would only have taken him if he changed his last name to Jones to fit in with the rest of the roster. Folks, stay away from Chad Ocho Cinco. He is crazy!
BONUS LIGHTNING ROUND:
1. Rex Grossman or Kyle Orton: Which one is starting in midseason? Kyle Orton.
2. WIll Wade Phillips lose his job after this season? Yes.
3. Playoff Picks? AFC: Patriots, Cleveland, Indy, San Diego, Jacksonville, and Pittsburgh. NFC: Cowboys, Packers, Saints, Arizona, Giants, and Eagles.
4. Championship Picks: AFC: Indy over Jacksonville. NFC: Packers over Giants
5. Superbowl Pick: Indy over Packers
6. Will Brett Farve retire at the end of the year? Undoubtedly.

Saturdays in the Fall are some of the best days ever. College football is in full swing and there is one thing for certain, there will be way too much underage drinking before 12 noon tomorrow. Pace yourselves young bucks and enjoy your favorite schools best attempt at the old college try. Stay hydrated and remember before you pass out later tonight, take a couple of Advil or Aleve along with two 8 oz glasses of water and youll be ready to rally on Sunday faster than you can say Jack Robinson.
The team here at www.Picks4Players.com loves the menu of college action this weekend with several underdogs that could rise up and surprise on the money line and then we like several Top 10 teams that will be looking to make a good impression on voters this weekend after the egg that USC laid up in Corvallis, Oregon on Thursday.
To try to keep some sense of order in selecting winners today were presenting them to you in a new format that were trying out this weekend only. Well start with favorites we like to cover, then underdogs that should cover and could rise up on the money line and win outright. Finally, well give you a few other recommendations that we like on the Saturday slate. please keep the feedback coming as it helps us grow and develop the site to better serve our loyal customers, the true Players. Have a profitable Saturday.
Oklahoma -18 vs. TCU: TCU has been outstanding thus far and they will challenge the Sooners a bit early, but look for Bob Stoops and company to roll in the second half as they seize the opportunity left by USCs embarrassing performance as the nations former #1 team. Picks4Players.com recommends OKLAHOMA -18
Penn State -15 1/2 vs. Illinois: After all of our research and evaluation, the team here at P4P loves this game. Illinois will bring their young defense into a raucous Saturday night in Happy Valley and a fired up Penn State squad seeking revenge from their last meeting with Illinois. Joe Pa isnt messing around anymore and he clearly has decided to look the other way so his staff can compete in recruiting blue chippers. This current band of Nittany Lions plays with more attitude and more swagger than most Penn State teams of the past. Look for a highly emotional, all clad in white Penn State squad to score early and often and rout Illinois. Picks4Players.com likes Penn State -15 1/2
Other favorites we expect to cover:
Michigan State -8 @ Indiana
Nebraska -7 over Virginia Tech
Ohio State - 19 vs. Minnesota
UNDERDOGS WE EXPECT TO COVER THE SPREAD AND POSSIBLY WIN OUTRIGHT:
ALABAMA + 6 1/2 @ GEORGIA (THIS IS +210 ON THE MONEY LINE)
TENNESSEE + 6 1/2 @AUBURN (THIS IS + 220 ON THE MONEY LINE) A few things jumped out at us regarding the Phillip Fulmer led Tennessee Volunteers. Did you know that following a loss, Tennessee has covered 16 out of their last 18 games, but even more impressive than that is after playing Florida, Tennessee is undefeated the next week under Coach Fulmer. We like Tennessee to cover and an outright win would not shock us.
Michigan + 5 1/2 vs. Wisconsin (This game is + 190 on the Money line) While Michigan continues to struggle in Rich Rodriguezs first season at the helm, the one thing that this group of Wolverines does well is stop the run. The only thing that Wisconsin seems to be able to do on a consistent basis is run the ball. Something has to give and this week it will be Wisconsin. Rodriguez will have his troops fired up, the Big House will be rocking, and Michigan will keep this close the entire way and dont be surprised if they win it with a field goal as time expires.
Other games that piqued our interest and we feel comfortable recommending:
Mississippi +23 @ Florida
Colorado State + 26 1/2 @California The Bears just dont blow too many teams out at home and in typi-CAL fashion, this one will be closer than it should be.
Ball State -20 vs. Kent Ball State has a nice offense and Kent is very proficient at giving up lots of yards and points. This one wont be close.
UNLV -4 vs. Nevada In this battle of the Silver State look for UNLV to take advantage of a depleted Nevada squad. The Wolfpack are missing their two top running backs and that will render them as a one dimensional, pass only team. Look for the Rebels to pin their ears back and apply pressure to the quarterback all day. We like UNLV -4.
Thats all for this College Football Saturday. Have fun, be careful, play wise, play smart. Play on player. Sincerely,
Your personal gaming consultants at www.Picks4Players.

I have no idea. I mean, theres no explanation.
Sure, you could say that Oregon State was totally focused on the game and nothing else because they hadnt started school yet (classes at OSU start on Monday), but do you really think the Trojans had their minds screwed up by some homework assignment or professors lecture? Independent of what else could be used as an excuse, one fact remains paramount. USC has infinitely more talent than the Beavers. There might be a handful of guys on Oregon States squad that the Trojans would like to be wearing the Cardinal and Gold (Jacquizz Rodgers may have had a sensational game, but do you think for a Hollywood minute SC coaches are rethinking their philosophy of recruiting tailbacks to include one that stands 5)? On the other hand, that number pales in comparison to the number of SC players the OSU coaching staff tried to recruit and couldnt even get into the picture - much less the homes of - with when it came to luring them to Corvallis.
Sure, all the factors occurred in an upset, e.g. the Trojans fumbling and the turnover leading to an Oregon State touchdown; an uncharacteristic, undisciplined cheap shot by an Southern Cal player offering the Beavers an additional opportunity which, naturally, they cashed in on, not only for a TD, but for a score that first looked like an interception just before the half ended, only to be bobbled by the Beaver receiver (rhyme intended, but no pun as this is a family blog) screwed the Trojans for six.
The reason I cant find an explanation for this incredible upset is because of the way USCs marvelously talented offense played in the second half. It seemed like Mark Sanchezs sideline antics got his guys fired up and they so easily did after intermission what they could not do in the opening 30 minutes. (Therein lies the question: Why couldnt they - didnt they - do the same in the first half)? I guarantee you everybody in Trojan Country is perplexed by that question. They needed a score to keep from getting completely embarrassed (they trailed 21-0 at the half), so they went out and scored a pair (while the defense throttled the Beavers offense which had been so amazing in the first half). Another Why?
At 21-14, Sanchez made a costly mistake, throwing into coverage, actually overthrowing into coverage, got picked off and returned so close to a score, it was a simple blast away from the clinching touchdown. Yet, even at that point, the Trojans, under the fiery leadership from their highly skilled QB, put up another score and was a recovery of an onside kick away from a certain comeback of epic proportions. But onside kicks arent ever a very reliable method to lean on and that was the case in this game.
Following the game, USC head coach Pete Carroll was his usual magnamimous self, giving all the credit to OSU (kind of easy when you lose an average of one game a year), although he did wrap up his remarks by saying his team didnt play well. Duh! The Men of Troy are so vastly superior in talent to the guys from Corvallis that they entered the game between three and four touchdown favorites.
Some might point out that, because there is so little to do in Corn Valley, that had something to do with the upset. Puh-lease. Do you really think the lack of entertainment prior to a road game ever has anything to do with a college football team losing. These guys are so singleminded of purpose, it wouldnt matter if the Presidential debates were held the night before the game and each player was given a front row seat. They simply wouldnt go (although dont let the NCAA know theyd probably sell the tickets since such a ducat would fetch big-time dough and dont think there isnt a person - or two - who make a living off of ticket scalping - and who would be close enough by to gladly take such a distraction off their hands - for a price.
When all is said and done, SC still cant be ruled out for the National Championship. Theyre just going to have to hope that no more than one team goes through the season undefeated (or that no team does) and SC wins out. With their remaining schedule (although when Coach Carroll made the statement, The Pac-10 is so ridiculously hard, I wondered what hed say if they were in the SEC, where each game actually is ridiculously hard - and then you have to a conference playoff, against the winner from the other side - which is ridiculously harder), its not a stretch to see the Trojans in the final game.
However, at the conclusion of this particular game, the fans let their enthusiasm pour onto the field, the identical enthusiasm the Beavs played with throughout (most of) the evening. So maybe this is just one of those games that Dee Andros, the late OSU football coach, known as The Great Pumpkin, for his rotund figure and propensity for dressing all in orange, would have quoted Andrew Carnegie:
A person can succeed at almost anything in which they have unlimited enthusiasm.

Are you ready for some football? Well the season has started in most parts of the country and fans and players alike are amped up! I start my week thinking about those Friday night lights and the electrifying excitement on the gridiron . Im especially excited to watch the talented players that show a real passion for the game and desire to play at the college level. If this is sound like you or your son take note. There is a tremendous amount of preparation before a game. Especially so for important games. There are practices, weight training and conditioning, film review position meetings.
If you are serious about playing at the college level, you need to prepare just as hard in the class room. The schedules for the SAT ACT for 2008 are now available. If you are a junior you should began to take them now! If you are a senior hopefully at this point you have done this and scored reasonably well. If not, RUN Sign up and do not pass go! If a college coach is considering you, you stand a much better chance at getting an offer if he knows that you have NCAA qualifying test scores and a good CORE GPA.
Keep in mind that some schools have their own admission requirements that may exceed NCAA minimums. By taking care of this early on, you stand a much better chance at getting a coach to pull the trigger and offer a scholarship. Please see the schedule of upcoming test dates and get busy: http://www.prepnow.org/prepsatframe.

Each college season, be it football or basketball, I belabor the point that somehow, collegiate athletes allow themselves to fall prey to the glow of the rankings and mostly, the glow of the media. Thursday night the talent-rich #1 USC Trojans were upset 27-21 by a lowly 1-2 - now 2-2 - Oregon State team. Jacquizz Rogers a 5 160 pound true freshman running back led the way for the Beavers and lit up the massive USC defenders rushing for 186 yards on 37 carries. It was an upset that sent shockwaves through the country. Suddenly, Georgia, Oklahoma, LSU, Missouri, Penn State, Wisconsin, Texas, and even BYU are thinking national championship.

Despite the warnings from Carroll, despite having 10 full days to prepare for their Pac 10 conference opener, USC was soundly beaten by a team that will thank its lucky stars if it wins six games this season.

Amaker’s Move Creates a Clash of Harvard Ideals
One week after the Harvard men’s basketball program was cleared by a five-month Ivy League investigation into its recruiting practices, Coach Tommy Amaker continued his aggressive overhaul of the team.
One by one, Amaker called five players into his office before classes began in early September and told them they no longer had spots on the team. The five players included all three sophomores on the team, each of whom started games last season.
Amaker said they were welcome to play on the junior-varsity team, but did not have varsity roster spots and could not participate in the preseason workouts and conditioning work, the players said. The move cleared room for Harvard’s heralded seven-man freshman recruiting class.

A smile on a sad day
It was the evening before the day she died - and yet I had forgotten the anniversary all together. Until I looked at the calendar before getting some shut eye - and saw the date right in front of me. September 23rd. Another year - another anniversary. Not one marked by a fancy vacation or sparkling champagne. But one marked by silk flowers at a tombstone that bears her name - that says “twin.

Heading into week 4 I feel pretty good about myself. I have tied it up with Mr. Pope, and this weeks picks seem solid. Here is to hoping my abilities as a football guru don't let me down. Check out his picks here.
Last Week: 4-1
Season
The Dust: 9-6
Mr. Pope: 9-6
Game of the Week
#6 LSU at #10 Auburn
Location: Auburn, AL
Stadium: Jordan-Hare Stadium
Date: Saturday, September 20
Time: 7:45PM
TV: ESPN
Match Up Edge
Head Coach: Auburn (Tommy Tuberville)
Offense: LSU
Defense: Auburn
Special Teams: LSU
X-Factor: 12th man
Breakdown
Auburn's 10th ranked defense takes on LSU's 12th ranked defense in the battle of the Tigers. What is generally a tough game for either team will continue to be so. Don't expect a shoot out by any means. Auburn would have the edge at home, as they are 9-5 against LSU all time at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The problem is, Auburn's offense struggled mightily at Mississippi State. The LSU defense should be more than enough to ensure that Auburn stays out of the endzone more often than not. This game is really a toss up considering the teams play each other close due to defense. The only deference I see is in the field position and offensive battle, which I am confident will be won by LSU. Look for the SEC's top offense to score enough, and ride RB Keiland Williams for the majority of the game.
The Pick: LSU
#9 Alabama at Arkansas
Location: Fayetteville, AK
Stadium: Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium
Date: Saturday, September 20
Time: 12:30PM
TV: Raycom Sports
Match Up Edge
Head Coach: Alabama (Nick Saban)
Offense: Alabama
Defense: Alabama
Special Teams: Alabama
X-Factor: Turnover battle
Breakdown
Given the rebuilding of Arkansas, and their last second squeeze by of teams like Western Illinois and UL Monroe, Alabama should be strong enough to win in Fayetteville. Baring turnovers, they will do just that.
The Pick: Alabama
#4 Florida at Tennessee
Location: Knoxville, TN
Stadium: Neyland Stadium
Date: Saturday, September 20
Time: 3:30PM
TV: ESPN 2
Match Up Edge
Head Coach: Florida (Urban Meyer)
Offense: Florida
Defense: Florida
Special Teams: Florida
X-Factor: 12th Man
Breakdown
Neyland Stadium better be rocking "Rocky Top" all afternoon long if they wish to see a Tennessee upset of the Florida Gators. QB Tim Tebow will have to deal with the noise as he makes his first start at Tennessee. What use to be the perennial showdown for the SEC East has quickly become lost in the mix after the Vols fall from grace and the arrival of Georgia to the National scene. Florida had a bye week to prepare, but they must do a better job of setting up scoring situations. If the Vols defense doesn't do a better job in containing the spread, this one will get ugly early.
The Pick: Florida
#18 Wake Forest at #24 Florida State
Location: Tallahassee, FL
Stadium: Doak Campbell Stadium
Date: Saturday, September 20
Time: 7:00PM
TV: ESPN 2
Match Up Edge
Head Coach: Wake Forest (Jim Grobe)
Offense: Florida State
Defense: Florida State
Special Teams: Florida State
X-Factor: Wake Forest QB Riley Skinner
Breakdown
Florida State's return to prominence hinges on this ACC Match Up of the Year candidate. Wake Forest has proven to be the best the ACC has to offer thus far, but the best offense in the ACC and #1 ranked defense in the country plans on squashing any hopes of a return to the ACC Championship for Jim Grobe and company. The Seminoles want to be in Tampa, and they probably feel it is a birth right. Expect the Noles to find a win.
The Pick: Florida State
#3 Georgia at Arizona State
Location: Tempe, AZ
Stadium: Sun Devil Stadium
Date: Saturday, September 20
Time: 8:00PM
TV: ABC
Match Up Edge
Head Coach: Georgia (Mark Richt)
Offense: Georgia
Defense: Georgia
Special Teams: Arizona State
X-Factor: UGA Defense
Breakdown
It's going to be hot in Tempe. Not humid, but hot. UGA leaves the Southeast for the first time in 40 plus years. It shall be interesting to see how they deal with the cross country travel and the temperature, especially on defense. This is a huge game for Georgia, who want to prove on the national stage that they belong in the National Title hunt. Sun Devil QB Rudy Carpenter and company must score early and often if they wish to upset UGA. Coming off season after season of not living up to their talent level, and coming off an embarassing loss to UNLV, Arizona State could make all of that go away with a win today. However, in the trenches, UGA will win against AZ State. The Dawg parade should continue and create some recruiting rumblings out West.

You must get your name out there to 100 college programs that are in your region and neighboring states.
Build a list of 100 college coaches and keep this list in some kind of database so you can keep track of phone calls, email, when DVDs were mailed or any other contact you might have had with a coach.
Your high school coach is not going to have time to do this every day and you may not either but someone is going to have to do it!
I would start with a hand written letter to all 100 coaches. You dont have to do all 100 the same day or week but start with a workable number of college programs. Five per week is a good number.
Thats 20 new college programs youre starting with each month. Start small just in case you make some mistakes. Writing a letter is a great personal touch. Most coaches or someone from that program will write you back because they want to get to know who you are and if you have the game to play in their program so they will follow-up with you at some point.
Emails are ok but until you have built some kind of rapport with that coach, I would hold off on the email. Also, many emails will get lost with all the billions of other emails that we all get every day anyway. Most are just junk email anyway.
Once you receive a letter back from the college coach, then this will help you to know what you should do next. You may get a questionnaire from that college program. Not the school, the college program. Make sure you fill this out and mail it back in. The questionnaire is just another step in the process so dont make a big deal about this. I have known student athletes to receive 2 or 3 questionnaires from the same college program so if that happens, just fill it out and mail it back. No big deal. Mail all the questionnaires you get back no matter how many you get.
Mailing a DVD; youll hear coaches refer to this as or they will ask, can I get a tape. Basically theyre talking about the DVD. (You must have one!)
Heres why the DVD is so important: college coaches are not going to come out to see you play unless youre somebody special. Get the DVD made and have 100 copies made but start with what you can afford first. Let say you start with 10 to 15 DVDs, thats ok. The key point here is to start. Most high school teams tape their games and you may be able to get a copy that way from your school or another parent who may be taping the game.
Some of the big retail stories sell those small camcorders for under $150 so you may want to invest in one. Of course you can use it for other family events. College games are good to tape and you may need that tape at some point, you never know.
Im always telling people to save their money and never use a college recruiting service because its a waste of money. You could put that hard earned money to better use.
College coaches dont want to hear from a service. They only want to hear from the athletes.
The DVD should be an entire game. You want to get the best game and you also may want to mix in some highlights. Remember, if youre not a very good player and you can get enough of yourself on tape then dont bother doing it. Getting the DVD made is more about getting exposure for good players, not players who dont play a lot.
When mailing your DVD, make sure you send a short note to the coach just to identify who the player is what they are looking at on the DVD. Include the players number and jersey color. Never, and I mean never just mail a DVD to a college coach unless they ask for if first. The reason is if they are not expecting a DVD from you then why would they take the time to look at it? Also, never just volunteer sending the DVD to a coach because 100% of the time, they will say send us one. What Im saying is hold on to the DVD and only if asked by the coaching staff or head coach, then go ahead and mail one off.
With the DVD just use regular mail. Theres no need to send it Overnight or FedEx. They will look at the DVD when they get ready and by sending Overnight express is just another waste of money. With college recruiting it is about working smart and saving your money and putting your money in the right places. Many parents feel that they have to get the DVD professionally made and that it has to be package in a special way. No! You dont have to do this. The simple approach is the best approach.
Just to review: you have a list of 100 college programs; you are going to write a hand written letter to each coach-start small,5 per week is good; get the DVD made and be ready to mail it out. The DVD should be mailed out during the junior season.
Now the ACT or SAT: take this test now, take it early and take it often. Too many high school student athletes wait until their last year in high school to take this test. I can never understand this, why anyone would hold off on either ACT or SAT. Youre not getting in college with a low score. When taking this very important test, be prepared. There is a practice test you can take just to get ready; you wouldnt go on the football field without a week or more of preparation. From what I understand the ACT or SAT is offered 4 times per year.
I always tell people to take the test the first time its offered to see how you do and then take the test the next time its offered. The reason here is the more you take the test the better youll do. Just like in sports; the more you do something over and over and over again the better youll get.
The higher you score, the better it will be for you. If you dont get a scholarship then you will end up getting academic money for college anyway and that will make your parents happy because they will not have to come out of there pockets for any big money for college. The academic money is important because at smaller college programs that dont give scholarships, its all about the grades and then what that athletic program can give money wise.
During the summer, you will need to play. If youre a football player, it will be at a camp where there are college coaching from many different colleges there. This is a great way for high school football players to be seen by a huge number of college programs.
AAU basketball, baseball showcases, J.O. events, golf, tennis and many other sports-- you need to play wherever you can because youre going to be seen by college coaches over and over and over again! The summer is a great time to be seen. Remember, you would never buy a car because someone told you what it looks like over the phone. College coaches are the same way. They need to see you play!
Ask yourself this question student athlete: Why would any college program want to give out a scholarship? Are you doing enough to win that scholarship?
One hundred college programs is a great number because this will make sure that you will not fall through the cracks of the college recruiting world. Keep in mind that there are many other things that you will need to do but this information is a first good step to getting recruited.
