One of MacMillans greatest memories from his years at the University of Denver was guiding the Pioneers to the 1960 National Championship by defeating the John MacInnes-coached Michigan Tech Huskies in Boston. MacMillan had scored two goals in the final minute that led the Pioneers 5-3 win, including the game-winner. A now-famous story that emerged from the victory has to do with MacMillan getting the game-winning puck. But as MacMillan explains, a National Championship title and the puck werent the only things that he took home from that memorable event.

I had the game-winning goal and I had another goal in the last minute. One won the game and the other one was an empty netter. I think it was someone from Denver ended up with the puck somehow. I do still have that puck, although I can't remember who saved the puck. Bob Martin, who did the radio for Denver for years, got a letter from somebody saying that they had recorded the game over the radio. I still have a tape at home of the recording of the whole game that somebody gave me, so that was pretty awesome to get it. But again, it was a Denver fan that had recorded it and gave it to me.

After leaving DU in 1960, MacMillan went on to play in both the NHL and the AHL. At the time, his rights were held by the New York Rangers. But a bit of luck and the prejudices against U.S. collegiate players at the time would play crucial roles in MacMillan ending up with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Earlier in the season when I was at DU in 1959-60, we went up to play at Michigan Tech, and Bob Davidson, who was the head scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs, came down to watch a game. We were sitting around eating breakfast one morning and he came over and said my name is Bob Davidson and Id like to talk to you. So I went over and talked to him for a little while, and I didnt think much about it.

When I decided to go to DU, the Rangers released me. They didnt want any part of me anymore, so they dropped me from their "Protected List. Any professional club who thought that was I worth a hoot could pick me up. The Leafs put me on their List after Davidson had talked to me. Thank God, Connie (Conn Smythe) had moved on by the time I was Protected by Toronto because he didn't think much of U.S. college players. Ol Connie would basically say we dont want any of those candy-ass collegiate kids in our league or on our club. Davidson came to the game when we played Tech because Louie Angotti, who played for Tech, had been with the Toronto Marlboros before he went to Michigan Tech. I think Louie was pretty highly regarded. He called Davidson and told him that he should have a look at me. Eventually I received a letter from Toronto inviting me to their camp and the rest is history.

MacMillan spent roughly three and a half years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning two Stanley Cups with them. MacMillans teammates on those Maple Leaf teams read like a Hockey Hall of Fame Whos Who. But it was playing for the legendary George Imlach that he remembers most fondly about his time in Toronto.

When I was in Toronto, Imlach had acquired Al (Arbour) from Chicago. And we were sort of like in a farm system. Back then a farm system would have maybe have a defenseman, a goaltender, and a forward that would go back and forth (from the big club). Imlach was good to me. I mean theyve got all these Marlies that I was playing with in Rochester, but I was the kid that Punch chose to run back and forth. That was good for me. Al was the defenseman, and I was like the tenth forward. So when youre doing that, you feel like youre a part of the team, but you also dont feel like youre a part of the team. You get to do that a little bit and you work hard to stay there. A lot of the players with Toronto at that time had come up through the Marlies organization. And Punch just came in and worked his magic with all of the personalities. He had a real feel for being able to get more out of people than probably a lot of other people could. Some guys didnt like him, and some people had bad things to say about him. He brings up Johnny Bower, who was something like 40 years old, and gets five, six great years out of him. You would hear the names (Frank) Mahovlich, Red Kelly, Tim Horton, Bobby Baun, Carl Brewer and all of those guys. Wow! You want to try to break into a tough lineup? Try and get into that lineup! So when I hear those names, I get all choked up from just having been around them.

Punch was always honest with me and he gave me every opportunity to try to get me to do what he wanted to me to do. I was playing pro for, oh maybe one or two years and I remember Bobby Kromm was coaching in Trail (BC), and Trail had won the Allen Cup and would be going to the World Hockey Championships. It was in 61, 62 somewhere in there. At the time, the Allen Cup in Canada used to be symbolic of the team that would go to the World Championships, and then later they changed all of that. So I called Kromm and I told him who I was and where I was. He said I know who you are. So I said Well, Ive got my degree in Engineering and Id love to go to Europe with you. Ive always wanted to go to Europe, just to play and see it. So he said if you can get your Amateur Card, then youre here. So I went to camp, worked hard and never said a word to anybody. I was still with the Leafs and then it came time for me to go talk to Punch. It wasnt a helluva lot of fun, but you had to go talk to Punch. (Laughs) So I talked to Punch and we got to talking, then I said I want to tell you that I called Bobby Kromm and this is what Id really like to do. Then Punch said I wont do that for you, simply because Eddie Shore will pick you up. And then he said If you dont go play for him, youll never play hockey again because he wont release you. Hell just hang on to you and that would be the end of anything that youd ever want to do. So I didnt get my Amateur Card and I didnt go to Europe.

In todays NHL, each member of the Stanley Cup winning team gets to spend a day with Lord Stanleys Cup. For MacMillan, his day came one summer day in August of 2005. While his time with the Cup in Milk River is well documented, an equally entertaining, if not more hilarious story was that of his travels with it to the border town of Sweetgrass, Montana.

One day, I think it was Friday or Saturday, we were all sitting around and Mike (Mike Bolt, one of the keepers of Lord Stanleys Cup) said, d really like to take the Cup to Montana because theres no reason that itll ever go there, but its been in all these states and Id like to think someday that its been in every state in the United States. So I said, hell, its only 13 miles from Milk River to Sweetgrass. So lets go. So he says what well do is throw in the back (of the truck), well just go down there and well take a picture. He wanted to go down there, hold the Cup under the Welcome to Montana sign and take a picture. Then he says I dont want to report that I have the Cup. And I said if you go through there (the border) and coming back they decide that they want to search you and you cant sell them on the fact that you dont have what you shouldnt have at the border, and they find that Cup, then youre going to spend hours there explaining why you have the Stanley Cup. So we convinced him that he should stop and tell them that he has the Cup and what hes going to do. So we go through towards the American side. He pulls up (at the border), rolls down his window, and the guy begins asking him all the questions. So then he sticks his head out the window and asks the guy do you know what the Stanley Cup is? The guy looked at him like what do you think, Im stupid or something? And then Mike says ve got it in the back Then the guy says ve got the Stanley Cup in the back of that SUV? Mike says . Then the guy says pull over and bring it in.

So we parked out in front and brought it in. By that time, the guy had already left the window, gone inside and everyone in the place knows that the Stanley Cup is coming through the front door. So we come in and then he says to us mon, weve got a plan. So we all got onto an elevator, went up to the second floor and theres a balcony in the U.S. Customs area in Sweetgrass, Montana that you could stand with one leg in Canada and one leg in the U.S. So they sit the Cup so it splits the line there and then all these U.S. immigration people are up there taking their pictures with the Cup. And theyre no different than a class of ten-year-olds getting their pictures taken with the Stanley Cup. Plus, they get on the phone and you can see this balcony from the Canadian side. And they holler out at the guys over there and said take a look out the window and see what weve got. You could see the Stanley Cup up there (in the balcony). So all of a sudden, here come all of these Canadians running towards the border. I dont know how long we spent there with everyone getting their pictures taken. Finally that was all done. Then we drove out of Sweetgrass and started up the hill and theres the sign that says, Welcome to Montana. So we pulled over to the side of the road. We pop the lid of the box that the Cup is in and get it out. We walked through this knee-high grass, through the ditch and up on the edge. Then Mike says take my picture first. So hes holding the Cup under the sign and we take his picture. Then he says Now John you take a hold of it and get under there and well take your picture. So as were doing all of this, this big 18-wheeler goes by and his (the drivers) head turns and he sees the Cup. Well then, here comes another big 18-wheeler, and he just pulls over to the side of the road and stops maybe four feet from us. Then the guy jumps out and asks is that the Stanley Cup? then Mike says . Right away this guys asks can I hold it? Can I get my picture taken with it? Of course Mikes very accommodating. So heres this guy standing in front of his truck holding the Stanley Cup getting his picture taken. He was just beside himself with excitement that this has happened. So we had a great time with it. We really did. It was fun to have it there.

With all of his success, John MacMillan remains humble and grounded. He is genuine with a gentle humor. And he is also one of the most personable individuals that you could ever meet. Now approaching his mid-70s, MacMillan is still as passionate and enthusiastic about hockey as he probably was the first time he ever laced up a pair of skates. Whether its stories and recollections about his wonderful family or the game that he loves, he will always share them with a smile.

In honour of the fifteenth year that Gary Bettman has been NHL Commissioner, I have decided to have a surprise party in his name. Of the guests expected to attend the party, at a playground for the elite, are: Craig Leipold (Wild owner), William Del Biaggio III (former Predators owner), Philip Anschutz (Kings owner) and Henry Samueli (Ducks owner).

While the names seem inconspicuous to the layman, they are at the heart of the downfall that may decide the kid commissioner's fate.

Leipold, Anschutz and Del Baggio, for the purposes of this article, are named the Three Amigos. From the outside, it appears they have conspired to undermine Bettman with the other 27 owners.

The tale is long and twisted with a plot that would make John Grisham or Dean Koontz stand up and take notice.

"Anschutz and Leipold are on Gary's executive committee"

It seems that Leipold and Anschutz, two of Bettman's closest confidants, lent Del Baggio $17 million in his attempt to buy a $25 million stake in the Nashville Predators. While it isn't clear what Leipold's motive was it is alleged that Anschutz wanted an empty transport truck warming up in front of the Sommet Center in Nashville (aka Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts). Even though Del Baggio had a minority stake in the Predators, he apparently had the ability to move the team to Kansas City, where Anschutz's Entertainment Group happened to own the Sprint Center.

Bettman, smug and cocky, at the best of times, went before the board of governors and told them he had no prior knowledge of this shady deal made in the dark hearts of men.

"Anschutz and Leipold are on Gary's executive committee," an NHL insider told Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star. " These are guys who are at the power centre of the league, close to Gary, and supposed to be his best allies and here they were lending Del Biaggio money, and not telling Gary, at a time when they were supposed to be reviewing his offer to become an owner.

"It stinks."

Will not tolerate any criminal activity from its owners

Just when Bettman thought his surprise party couldn't get any worse, Samueli, led by federal authorities, enters the party.

The owner of the Anaheim Ducks faces the prospect of five years probation and $12.2 million in fines after admitting he lied to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commmission about a stock option scandal within his company Broadcom.

The smart thing for Bettman to do, if not the most obvious, would be to distance himself from Samueli and say that the NHL will not tolerate any kind of criminal activity from its owners.

In his typical evasive style, Bettman said Samueli is one of the most charitable men in Orange County and he wasn't going to worry about something that may or may not have occurred.

The commish didn't have to run Samueli up the yardarm but he should have made it clear that these type of incidents aren't acceptable in the NHL.

I couldn't make this stuff up.

Ill-conceived expansion over the last fifteen years

These owners are Bettman's hand-picked choices and I guess nothing less than blind loyalty from him was warranted. In the words of a salty dog, "The man is going down with the ship."

I think that greed and arrogance have played a large role in these incidents. When Bettman started his expansion plans across the Southern U.S., how could the owners resist lining their pockets with expansion money? Or how could Bettman, the owners messiah, admit that he was wrong in pushing hockey into markets where it doesn't stand a chance of ever succeeding.

Or maybe it was all bad luck.

Not likely, considering these recent incidents are a direct result of ill-conceived expansion over the last fifteen years.

Having said that, what these two episodes show us is quite clear.

It seems Bettman's zeal for hockey in southern markets has resulted in a lack of due diligence in the search for owners. It also appears the commish is running a banana republic. What the hell are the Three Amigos dealing in secret for?

Maybe Gary took his invisible pills that week.

At least one thing is clear, "we all see you Gary and we're watching.

This was the first year that USA Hockey sent both their U18 and U17 team to compete at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota, and I think it was a pretty big success. While all the games drew pretty decent crowds and a fair number of scouts, the games featuring the USA teams always drew the most people. I think people were curious to see the NTDP teams play because it gives people a first look at the U17 team, and a first look at the U18 team in their draft year.

I saw the U17 team's first three games and the first two games of the U18 team. I'll give a few opinions on what I saw, starting with the U18 team.

The U18 team

They finished the tournament with 2 wins and 2 losses. Jeremy Morin only dressed in two games. You can probably guess which two. I don't think that was a coincidence either. This team is likely going to be defined by incredible top end talent, but very little in the way of depth. Without Morin, the offense looked pretty stagnant. There was way too much play on the offensive perimeter with guys who aren't suited for that style of play. The powerplay mostly consisted of defenseman blasting one-timers from the point, which were often ineffective because there was no one in front of the net for deflections or rebounds.

I think once this team gets into the college portion of their schedule, they--much like last year's team--will start playing a little better just because they're force to. The big question will be how far can their top players carry them this season, and will the lack of depth come back to haunt them.

Here are some individual thoughts on players, and whether or not they helped or hurt their draft stock this weekend:

Cam Fowler: Not eligible for the draft this year, but should go early in the first round next year. Played very sloppy in their second game, but overall, has an unbelievable amount of talent. He may not ever leave the ice in critical games for the US. Draft Stock: Too early to tell. I'd say he's at worst a top 10 pick next year. How he performs next year will likely determine where in the top 10 he goes.

Jeremy Morin: One of the most explosive goal-scorers the US has ever had. The one player that looked absolutely dominant against weaker competition. Draft Stock: Teams will wait and see how he does against better competition, but he could move into the top 10 in the draft.

Drew Shore: I don't think he played very well, despite finishing with a nice point total. Everything just seemed a little off. The size and skills are there though, and you can probably chalk it up to being early in the season. Draft Stock: I'd hold him steady at a late first/early second round draft pick.

Sam Calabrese: Played forward the whole time and didn't really do much. Draft Stock: I'd be surprised if Calabrese got drafted.

Ryan Bourque: One of the better US forwards on the first night. He was skating hard and making plays all over the ice. Draft Stock: I'd move him up from where I had him listed in my draft rankings.

David Valek: Got knocked out early in the second game with what looked like a concussion after scoring a pretty goal. He was one of the guys that should have been grinding in front of the net rather than trying to play on the perimeter. Draft Stock: Down a little.

Chris Brown: I continue to be impressed with how he's playing. He's big, skates well, and throws his body around. Plus, he's starting to get time with the top lines and his point totals look to be going up. Draft Stock: I already had him fairly higher, but he might move up even higher.

John Ramage: Played pretty well for being a newcomer. He should be reliable defensively, though his aggressiveness should put him the box fairly frequently. Draft Stock: Up a little bit.

Kevin Lynch: Not the prettiest player to watch, but very effective. Can stickhandle around any defender one-on-one, though I'm not quite sure how. Draft Stock: Should stay about the same.

William Wrenn: Not that noticeable, which is good for a defensive defenseman, though he wasn't exactly dominant from the blueline. Draft Stock: I probably had him a little high, and he should move down a little bit.

John Henrion: Looks like a very good player, though he didn't do a lot in the two games I saw. You can probably chalk it up to being a new guy. Draft Stock: He'll get drafted somewhere; how high will depend on how he adjusts to playing for the US.

Richie Crowley: Got moved to forward after Valek's injury. Was decent on the blueline and invisible as a forward. Draft Stock: Probably moving down, but I think he can still contribute as a defenseman.

Nick Mattson: Not the most physically gifted, but sees the ice unbelievably well and made some incredible passes. It's fun to see him get the puck on his stick just to see what he'll do with it. Draft Stock: He'll be in the 2010 draft. He's not a definite first round pick, but should be drafted somewhere in the first day.

Kenny Ryan: Played on the the third line and was pretty quiet. Draft Stock: Too talented to not be drafted somewhere, but probably somewhere later in the draft.

Brendan Rempel: I've never been overly impressed with Rempel and I thought he really struggled here. He's new though, so there will probably be an adjustment period. Draft Stock: Down a little bit.

Chris McCarthy: Also on the third line with Ryan and was pretty quiet. He showed some flashes of offensive brilliance, but I don't think he'll be a huge offensive contributor this year. Draft Stock: May play his way into being drafted this year.

Tyler Amburgey: Played pretty sparingly. Was a forward on Thursday. I saw him take a few shifts on defense on Friday. Draft Stock: Not seeing as much will probably hurt him.

Brandon Maxwell and Adam Murray: Both goalies did not look their sharpest. Maxwell let in 8 goals on 39 shots, Murray let in 8 goals on 40 shots.

San Jose started a healthy mix of 10 regulars and 8 prospects with Evgeni Nabokov in goal for the second preseason game against the Anaheim Ducks Friday night at HP Pavilion. With the top line of Marleau-Thornton-Clowe and the Blake-Vlasic pairing scratched, the focus shifted to the second line of Michalek-Pavelski-Cheechoo and Dan Boyle and Christian Ehrhoff on the blueline.

Anaheim backup goaltender Jonas Hiller struggled with traffic in front, but the top line of Perry-Marchant-Miller and the physical play of right wing Bobby Ryan down low improved as the game wore on. Chris Pronger was boo'd almost every time he touched the puck, making it easy to keep an eye on his play.

Jonathan Cheechoo opened with an early hooking penalty on Todd Marchant. Corey Perry misses center Andrew Ebbet with a pass in front, Drew Miller called for holding the stick to negate the rest of the man advantage. Sharks 2007 1st round draft pick Logan Couture easily stickhandles around defenseman Brian Salcido on the left wing, resulting in a low percentage shot short side.

Later in the period, defenseman Jason Demers takes a nice feed on the point from defenseman Mike Moore and unloads a low slapshot that rebounds up high in the slot. Milan Michalek knocks the puck down, but Joe Pavelski hammers it past an extended Hiller for the first goal of the game (assists Michalek, Demers). It was Pavelski's first goal of the preseason.

Derek Joslin, who scored a goal in the first preseason game in Anaheim, fires a hard slapshot from the point that sails over the top of the net and deflects loudly off the glass. Ducks move the puck up ice and into the Sharks zone. Left wing Drew Miller and center Todd Marchant go into the corner with possession, nice play by Logan Couture and Lukas Kaspar to seal off their men, gain possession, and move the puck out. Couture finishes his shift with a hard check on defenseman Steve Montador up against the end boards.

Jonathan Cheechoo leads Michalek with a nice pass at center ice, and Michalek is able to blow by two Anaheim Ducks to direct a weak shot on Hiller. Pronger finishes the play by checking Michalek up against the glass, both teams scuffle briefly as a result. Next shift for Logan Couture, he hit Dan Boyle with a long cross ice pass through the Anaheim slot. Hiller is in position to make the save on Boyle, but Montador is called for a hooking penalty on the play.

Sharks power play unit is starting to click. Ehrhoff pinches on one attempt to fire the puck on net and then follows by sneaking in even furthur. The second attempt by Ehrhoff leads to a Plihal backhand from the crease. Anaheim responds with their best offensive chance of the game to this point, a tip on the doorstep just wide of Evgeni Nabokov.

Second half of the first period, the Sharks break out to a 4-on-1 against Jonas Hiller. Michalek with the puck hesitates, and then hits Jonathan Cheechoo trailing the play for a 1-timer. Hiller gets over in time to smother a shot that was against the grain and back in on his body. Travis Moen is called for charging, earning another Sharks power play.

The Sharks first power play unit consists of Setoguchi, Morris, Roenick, Ehrhoff and Boyle. The Ducks first penalty kill unit consists of Pahlsson, Niedermayer, O'Donnell and Pronger. Boyle, a right shot on the left side, and Ehrhoff, a left shot on the right side, are a dynamic defensive pairing. Mike Morris hits Setoguchi with a hard pass in the slot, but Setoguchi's stick is checked on the play and he can not control the puck. Boyle unloads a heavy point shot on the left side, puck deflects wide. On the opposite point, Ehrhoff fires another point shot. Hiller is in position to make the save. Michalek tried to tip a low shot, with Michalek and Cheechoo collapsing on net for a rebound, but Michalek is checked to the ice by O'Donnell. No explanation for O'Donnell and Michalek drawing roughing penalties on the play, it should be either one player or the other earning a call. Michalek's penalty should read 2 minutes for hitting the ice too hard. Boyle and Ehrhoff at this point look like they can play an entire 2 minute power play without much of a problem.

Anaheim center #48 Andrew Ebbett, who scored 18 goals and 54 assists in 74 games played for the AHL Portland Pirates last season, danced around a Sharks defenseman to get a shot on goal. Excellent display of skill. Sharks earn another power play on a Steve Montador interference penalty. A very quick Riley Armstrong breaks into the zone and snaps a shot on Jonas Hiller. Sharks keep it in the zone, and Derek Joslin unloads a heavy shot from the point that deflects off Hiller. #55 Mike Moore is called for interference. On the ensuing faceoff, Cheechoo is checked by O'Donnell up against the glass near the photographers. Next sequence Roenick bobbles the puck as a lane closes, but he skates 5 feet up ice to find a new lane and hits Mike Moore with a long cross ice pass. Moore shoots the puck into the body of Hiller. Second attempt by Setoguchi in close shortly after.

The heavyweights George Parros and Jody Shelley drop the gloves at 17:30. Two hard rights by Parros start the fight as the crowd cheers loudly. Jody Shelley lands several glancing blows as Parros starts to jab with the hand holding Shelley's jersey. Shelley opens a cut on Parros with a hard punch that connects square, but Parros is busy throwing wildly. Refs seperate a fairly even fight, but the crowd roars when a bloody Parros is shown on the giant video screen skating off the ice.

Devin Setoguchi is called for a penalty with 1:23 remaining, 2 minutes for hooking Logan MacMillan. Boyle, Moore, Michalek and Pavelski are the Sharks first penalty kill unit. Ryan, Miller, Perry, Pronger and Salcido are the first power play unit for Anahiem. Perry shot/pass from the right side finds Ryan in front, Nabokov covers the net low and makes the save. Anaheim gets the puck back over to Perry on the half boards, who fires another shot/pass which deflects off Nabby's left leg pad. Ebbett is there to hammer the rebound home for Anahiem, game tied 1-1 (assists Perry, Pronger at 19:59).

Both teams were held scoreless in the second period, with San Jose outshooting Anaheim 12-6. Perry-Marchant-Miller line strong early in the second period. After an extended cycle, Jeremy Roenick takes a hooking penalty. On the penalty kill, Joe Pavelski gains possession on the right side, pulls up and misses a streaking Michalek in the slot.

A hard check by defenseman Mike Moore on Travis Moen to keep the puck in the zone starts a scuffle. Moen is a veteran in the fight game going up against a young defensive prospect looking to open eyes on the NHL ice. Several hard punches by Moen land early, he keeps up a high work rate. One off balance looping shot by Moore lands and stuns Moen briefly. Moen jabs with his hand wrapped in Moore's jersey, and eventually takes him down.

The scoring onslaught picked up in the third period. The Sharks scored 4 unanswered goals before George Parros finished the scoring late in the period. Milan Michalek drives with the puck past the net to the left, and tries to pass to Joe Pavelski in the crease. Pavelski is tied up, and the puck deflects directly to Dan Boyle who fires a shot passed Jonas Hiller for his first goal as a San Jose Shark (assists Pavelski, Michalek). Shortly after the goal, Joe Pavelski is called for a 2 minute hooking penalty on Logan MacMillan.

The crowd is loudly booing Chris Pronger each time he touches the puck, and several times when it just looks like he is going to receive a pass. A shot by #53 Brett Festerling pinballs off of two sticks and is turned into the corner by Nabokov's last second kick save. Later in the period, #55 Mike Moore receives a pass on the point and quickly releases a shot on net. Logan Couture sets up a screen in front with his stick high in the air, and the puck beats Hiller 5:29 into the third period (assists McGinn, Joslin).

The Ducks top line is dangerous on every shift. Correy Perry takes an entry pass into the offensive zone, and two quick strides give him seperation on the defense. Perry snaps a low shot wide, with a rebound off of Nabokov landing in the crease. Perry tries to lift the puck high, but Evgeni Nabokov is all over it with his glove. Crowd starts chanting Nab-by, Nab-by, Nab-by.

As the College Football 2008 season is finally underway and Im still pumped up for the college football season with me being back to a full time notre dame fighting irish fan again. Even though it is College Football season I will be very excited when the 2008 -09 College Basketball season begins in November. Just think everybody the 2008 College Basketball season is less the 2 months away less then 2 months because  it is mid september now. And I will be a full time notre dame fighting irish basketball fan and I will like them now on for good and they will only be my favorite team. I will only like them. And good timeing to even though It really dont matter to me how good the team is I dont pick a team that way honestly I dont. But I am glad that my new College Basketball team might be expected to be ranked 5th in the nation as I heard from my family member who is a big full time Notre Dame fan he never had the problem i had with switching teams again and i can say Iam never again going to have that problem myself. Im always will be an Irish fan. Their was only a 10 year differince when I wasnt a fan of ND in Basketball and Football. And I still got a lot of years left in me to live so I can still be considered to be a big notre dame fan. I know what being a fan is all about it means how well you like that team.  As excited I get about College Football season starting up that is how excited I get each year about the 2008-09 College Basketball season starting up and Iam pumped up. I can sort of say I was a  Notre Dame fan last season even though I didnt mention it very much I dont think. I watched alot of ND games and cheered them on alot! Like how it is for the NFL game exhibition games the 2008 Basketball season opens up in November with those coaches vs cancer games in Mid to Late October on ESPN! And those other type of things like that coaches vs cancer I cant remember all the names. So Yes the 2008-09 Basketball season will be underway in less then 2 months because as you all should be aware of Next Month is October. And which also another Ncaa Mens Sport that begins. The 2008-09 Mens Ncaa Hockey Season will start to sometime in October And I will be very excited again to watch Hockey. Iam a big Football fan and Basketball fan and Hockey. I like Hockey because it makes me think of cold weather that is if you live in the great lake state of Michigan.

The tragic accident and the loss of Dan Snyder's life is pretty serious and depressing stuff, and I elected to pass on it. I did not want to deal with it at all back then, tuning out news casts and passing on print and online articles. It was just too sad.

It was not until 2007 that I picked up a copy of the text, and even then I only did because I found it in a bargain bin of a Vancouver used bookstore. Don't tell Manasso - I got it for only $2.

Even then I still was not prepared to deal with the story. I put it on my shelf and did not pull it back out until now, the summer of 2008.

For reasons I still can not ascertain, I suddenly felt that I was ready to deal with the story. It may have something to do with Luc Bourdon's tragic motorcycle death this summer. As a Canucks fan, I knew a bit about Luc Bourdon and what a great kid he was. I knew next to nothing about Dan Snyder, and I think I felt guilty about that. I guess it was time that I finally honour Dan Snyder's memory and learn as much as I could about Dan Snyder and his amazing family.

There is no better place to do exactly that than Manasso's A Season Of Loss. It is an expertly penned book that looks beyond the life and tragic death of Snyder, but also into Dany Heatley's ordeal and how the Snyder family forgave him and welcomed him into their home.

The book opens with the infamous Ferrari crash, which is a little abrupt but somehow very fitting. After all it is here where most of us will remember Dan Snyder. It certainly grabs the reader's attention right away. Manasso even includes transcripts of the 911 call by the first person on the scene. I must admit that I tried to read through that, but I skipped ahead because I was not ready for that much realism.

The next two chapters take turns looking at the two main characters of the story - Snyder and Heatley. The two are portrayed as very different people off the ice, almost as different as they are on it. But Snyder and Heatley, the driver of the Ferrari, became the best of friends and will be forever intertwined in history.

As much as this is Dan Snyder's story and the Snyder family's story, this is also very much Dany Heatley's story. Somehow he survived the crash with a broken jaw, a minor concussion, a bruised lung, bruised kidney, and three torn ligaments in his right knee, but every day of his life he has to live knowing his mistake took the life of his best friend.

Manasso does a good job of trying to tie the stories of Snyder and Heatley together. He had no easy job in doing that either, as Heatley declined to participate in the book's creation, never even answering Manasso's requests for interviews. Of course, at the time Heatley faced lengthy legal battles, and he was advised to say nothing at all to the media by his lawyers.

After establishing the characters and their great bond, the book returns us to the hospital where Snyder fights for his life but ultimately can not hold on. The funeral is held back in Elmira, Ontario, a tiny Mennonite community that is greatly shaken by their hero's death.

The final several chapters, which represents the bulk of the book, turns to the story of the community's healing process, and of course especially that of the Snyder family. The Snyders were quick to publicly forgive Heatley, something that surprised many people. They did not just publicly support him, they brought him into their home and they helped each other heal together.

I'll admit, the chapters about healing and forgiveness and justice were a bit laborious, but that is completely my fault, not Manasso's. It goes back to my feelings that prevented me from reading this book for three years. Even when I read it I could not understand (I did not want to understand?) how this family was able to embrace forgiveness and accept what had happened so quickly. Perhaps this is because I do not want to ever find myself in their position. I don't want to relate to them.

Because of my own misgivings I was not able to invest my full emotions into this book, making it at times a tough read. I almost want to apologize to Manasso because he did an absolutely fantastic job authoring this book, but I am not yet fully able to appreciate all that it is worth.

I think the thing I may take away from this book the most is the quote by Snyder's junior teammate Ryan "Sticks" Christie.

"Nothing Loved Is Ever Lost."

Undoubtedly some great and famous philosopher actually coined that phrase, but Christie is the one who taught it to me. What a comforting thought to carry with us through not only loss, but how we approach every day we live.

The Dan Snyder story is a sad one. But at the same time it is a hopeful story.
