Southern Guilford football player Scotty Wayne was killed in a Saturday morning car crash, 17-year-old Cameron Scott Wayne — was ejected from the car and died at the scene.
Here are some of the comments and memories we have been receiving here at GREENSBOROSports.com and we wanted to share these with you at this post. They are very nice and we appreciate them, and we know you will too.

I spent most of my time in the military deployed or living on foreign soil. One thing I will never get use to is the loss of a young life. This year we have lost two area football players, Matt and now Scotty. Both young men loved the game of football. Both young men had bright futures ahead of them. Both young men were loved by many. Both young men will be missed by a community of people.
I hope and pray that each young man or woman reading this post takes inventory of his or her life. Are you taking advantage of your opportunities? These two young men were. Unfortunately, they won’t get the chance to finish what they started. Scotty Wayne was headed to East Carolina on a Football scholarship. He was doing the things necessary to live his dream. Matt Gfeller was fulfilling his dream of playing high school football.
Life is short. You’re only young once. Feel free to add your own cliche’. I guess what I’m trying to say is that many of you have a whole world out there waiting on you. Don’t be afraid to dream. You are young and there is a world of possibilities for you. Take advantage of them. Chase your dreams daily! Enjoy high school. Enjoy being young, but please don’t take life and it’s opportunities for granted. There are those who won’t get the opportunity to play another Friday night. There are those who won’t get the opportunity to attend college. There are those who won’t have the opportunity to become mothers, fathers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc.
We need you all of you to dream big and achieve. Both of these young men did. I can think of no better way to celebrate their legacies!

To the family of Sotty Wayne: I just want you to know that Scotty was like a son to me, every time he would come to the thrusday night games he would sit with Darren and I and i would always talk to them about girls and to keep their head on straight and to always make their mommies proud. The response I always got from the both of them was “YES MAM”. I can honestly say that I really love those guys and I would always try to make them laugh and they did the same in return. Scotty even promised me that he wouldnt rough up my son CJ to hard when they had to practice together, and I would laugh. I have fond memories of Scotty. His sister is in the classroom with my daughter and has been on outtings with us too. So i will continue to pray for his entire family not just on this week but everyday.love you guys .

Scotty was always that person to lean on, always the one to brightin up the room when the light seemed so dim. Since 3rd grade we been friends and even though I moved we still remained close. I keep crying but then I remember the type of person he was. He would want me to celebrate his great accomplishments in life and not mourn and cry over his death. Scotty you will never be forgotten you had a great impact on me and plenty of other ppl. I love you man.

My family would like to express our appreciation for your kind remarks and words of encouragement during this time. Scotty was a remarkable young man. A good young man who dreamed the impossible. As hard as it may be for you to go forward without Scotty on the field, in the classroom, in the neighbor, track field or My Space….where ever each of you may have come in contact with our son, brother, nephew, cousin or grand son do it because Scotty would have wanted you to. Never forget Scotty…each of you touched his life in so many ways and he touched your lives too. May God Bless each of you! “God Is The Light.”
I was informed last night that Scotty Wayne was a member of the NCHSAA Track and Field 4100 Relay team that won the State 2-A Championship last year. Also on that team if info serves correct were SG Storm students Darren Garcia and William Graves.

As pointed out in the comment box on Saturday afternoon, Time-Warner Cable has added the Big 10 Network to our local cable service. The network is dedicated to covering all things Big 10 so I decided to check it out and watched a little bit yesterday morning. Their type program is called Big Ten Tonight and as I watched a highlights package, I noticed a familar voice. It was former WFMY sportscaster Rick Pizzo.
It is always interesting to see folks who have been here and have moved on to bigger and better things. It got me to thinking about others who have passed through town on their way up the broadcasting ladder.
Heres a few -
Mark Concannon - Concannon was a sportscaster at WFMY during the mid-1980s. In 1987, Concannon moved to Milwaukee as a sports reporter and since 1990 has been a staple of that markets morning news coverage. He currently works as a news anchor on the morning show on Milwaukees Fox 6.
Chip Caray - Caray, the son of Skip Caray and grandson of Harry Caray, worked for WFMY in the late 1980s. Caray left Greensboro to do play by play work for the NBAs Orlando Magic, where he stayed until 1996. He has also done plenty of work in baseball, having done play by play for the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves as well as the Fox Network. Caray still works for the Braves and is also the lead play by play man for the MLB on TBS.
Dan Rath - Rath was a sportscaster for WXII for a number of years. One of his staple bits was the I dare Dan segment where viewers would dare Rath to try a new athletic endeavor. You can now dare Dan to try and sell your house in our current unsure housing market. Rath works in Real Estate with Keller Williams Realty in Winston-Salem.
Mike Hogewood - The was one of the staple broadcasters in the area for years, working at WGHP in the 1980s before moving to WFMY where he worked for 15 years. In 2001, Hogewood left WFMY to concentrate on other projects. Today, he works for Lincoln/Raycom on football and basketball games and hosts an number of ACC themed shows. Hogewood is also a pitchman for a Greensboro area car dealer.
Scott Pryzwansky - Pryzwansky worked at WFMY in the late 1990s and early 2000s. After leaving WFMY, he has served as a reporter and host for live telecasts of the Men’s ACC Basketball Tournament, ACC Football, and SEC Football. To go along with his broadcasting work, Pryzwansky now operates Pryzwansky Media Coaching and Communications.
Sam Crenshaw - Crenshaw worked at WFMY from 1991 to 1998 before moving to Atlanta. Crenshaw also served as the anchor for Black College Sports Today on ESPN. Crenshaw is still in Atlanta, where he works as a sports anchor for the markets NBC station, Channel 11.
Woody Durham The long time Tar Heel play by play voice worked at WFMY for 14 years in the 1960s and early 1970s. Woody may or may not be related to GreensboroSports.coms Andy Durham. Certainly the NC State part of Andys family hopes this is not the case.
Johnny Phelps - Phelps worked in this market for years, doing sports for WFMY, WXLV and WMAG-FM on their morning show with Bill Flynn. Phelps left WXLV to work for CNNs new sports network, CNNSI. CNNSI ceased operations in 2002. Phelps now works in Real Estate with Harry Norman Realtors who deals with property in North Carolina and Georgia and is based out of Atlanta.
Rick Pizzo - Pizzo left WFMY for the Big Ten Network in 2007.
Marlo Klain - The former WXII reporter has worked with ESPN since 1997. She is currently the Indianapolis-based bureau reporter and IRL reporter for the network.
Chan Harrison - Master Control Operator at WXLV now MCO at ESPN in Bristol, Conn. (OK, Chan is not really famous or a sportscaster but he is definately infamous in some circles and likes watching sports on TV.)
Im sure that I have forgotten a few but these were a couple of the folks that came to mind. If you have others, join the discussion in our comment box.

Lynn Underwood, Professor of Biomedical Humanities, has been invited to participate in a think-tank colloquium entitled Psychiatric Surgery; Enhancing or Limiting Freedom? The colloquium takes place Thursday, September 25 through the weekend in Cleveland.
Underwood was one of only 13 people invited to take part in the conference. Others involved are from Vanderbilt, Brown Medical School, Claremont Graduate University, Arizona State, Penn State, University of Oregon, and Stanford. The organizer of the conference is from the Cleveland Clinic, a world leader in neurosurgery. The purpose of the conference is to engage in-depth discussion from a variety of disciplines to tackle and address issues related to human freedom.
The conference is important, Underwood says, in order to discuss how to avoid the kinds of misuses that can emerge in the field of psychiatric interventions.
This project will feed into Underwoods Neuroethics course at Hiram. This course has been offered every year and is a no-prerequisite introductory course. It draws students in biomedical humanities, psychology and neuroscience and also meets general education requirements. In previous years students have gone to the Cleveland Clinic and interacted with a neurosurgeon about the various issues raised.

There were not too many upsets last evening, but there were once again, some very close games. If anyone has any video footage out there, send us an E-mail to durhamandy@live.com and we can try and come up with another FedEx Ground Play/Player of the Week. Terrance Topps may be working to retire this award with his second straight week of heroics for Southeast Guilford in their 10-8 win over NWG.
The picks record for this week was 7-1 and the season total climbs to 39-8 with week number six staring us in the face already. We have updates on the site from Joe Barile, Doug Cockman, Bruce Bullington, Paul Lambeth and comments from Greg, Mark, Ray Krebbs and others on last nights games. I heard Jim Young, now formerly of the News and Record; this past week subbing for Adam Gold on 850 the Buzz out of Raleigh, and now Jim Young has climbed on board at one of the ACC web sites. It will be a very busy fall for Rob Daniels of the NR as he tracks all the college football.
Joe, Doug, Bruce, and Paul taking care of business, and as for the other games in the HS Spotlight from last evening, we observe one key fact, that the records dont lie. Northeast Guilford is (0-4) and Eastern Randolph is now (0-5). That requires a double-take.
Northern Guilford lost for the first time this season as they fell at home to the East Lincoln Mustangs 20-7. I did my pre-game research on East Lincoln and found out they were (10-5) overall last year and went deep into the playoffs, but I still had to stick with Northern until they absorbed their first loss and now it has happened.
Joe had the Greensboro City Championship with Dudley and Page and we had Greg over in High Point for the Central-Andrews game which decided the HP City Title. The title goes to HPA with their 23-16 win over HPC. We had at least 3 comments that came in here at the blog yesterday, saying that HP Andrews was the bomb, and I see that they are. Central fans tell me they would have won the Max Meeks/Larry Craven Trophy if the Bison quarterback Drew Adams would have been able to stay in the game. Adams threw 2 TD passes but he got knocked out of the contest late the 4th quarter. Andrews fans are saying that Adams needs to transfer over to the Raiders if he wants to play for a real team, but other insiders are telling us that Andrews has a freshman QB on the JV team that is going to break every record that Johnny Evans set back in the 70s and all of those records are still standing at HPA today. Jordan Reid and Tony Washington are All-Sate candidates for HP Andrews this season and dont be surprised if Washington makes the First-Team.
High Point Andrews insider Jeff Summey says watch out for the Red Raiders and the word on the street is to keep a watch on the area 3-A races, they may be the best in the State. HP Andrews, Ragsdale, Southeast Guilford, and the Dudley Panthers. Who cares about the rest, we have the best right here in Guilford County and Locktoberfest is going to be extra special this year. Ragsdale goes to Southeast this Friday to get the ball rolling in September and who will be better? SEG, Ragsdale, HPA, or Dudley????? Line em up and let them play
Western Guilford made us a winner with their 32-27 come-from-behind win over Southwest Guilford. Julius Hooks ran a late kickoff back 95 yards for the game-winning touchdown and SWG falls to (0-5) while WG improves to (2-3). Hooks, QB Corey McKenna, RB Brandon Easter and RB Josh Lowe all had big-time games for the WG Hornets.
Southern Guilford, behind the 4 TDs from Scotty Wayne, rolled over Southwestern Randolph 41-7 and this game was a blow-out and we thought it might be close with both SG and SWR coming in at (3-1). The Storm are a convincing (4-1) with Waynes two rushing touchdowns and the other two coming on passes from SG QB Darren Garcia. Wayne finished with 110 yards on the ground and 91 yards on just three receptions.
We touched on it earlier and the results are in for NEG, now standing at (0-4) after last nights 39-7 loss to Reidsville. They say the Ram parents are rumbling out at NEG, but they better keep their mouths shut and just look up on the back of the Bill Bookout Stadium and observe all that Ram coach Tommy Pursley has accomplished in his time with this team. Give TP and his staff a break, you have to have a down year sometime.
We will close out this week by saying. Here comes East Forsyth. The EF Eagles topped Mount Tabor last night to move to (5-0) and they were led by Danny OBrien in the win over Hunter Furr and the MT Spartans. Late in the game DOB got knocked out and the backup QB had to come in for EF to help close out the victory.

This is it, for all the Greensboro (proverbial) marbles.
Page comes into the match up riding out their first L of the season in a heart wrenching loss to Ragsdale. Dudley comes in beating up on arch rival Smith (even though they are getting better, they are still the Triads mop). Everyone knows about Dudleys defense and how big, fast, and physical they are. But, Page has the potential to move the ball on them. With speedy athletes in the shotgun spread offense.
Big question marks are that Page QB Will Newman sat out the later part of the 4th quarter against Ragsdale with a Grade 1 concussion. He did not practice on Monday, but is supposed to on Tuesday and he is probable to play on Friday. As well as Pages starting RB Lenny Gordon having some sort of shoulder injury, he was pulled out of the game against Ragsdale, early in the 1st quarter. I have some insight on his injury. He said that it is not serious, but he has a small chuck of his collar bone missing and that it really happened a few months ago, but he reaggravated it on Friday. He should play this Friday, but he did sit out of contact drills in Mondays practice.
Keys for Dudley will be to not turn the ball over and play to their strengths, Page will be looking to exploit the defensive secondary. Dudley will also need to limit the penalties, sometimes they get over aggressive and get holding calls or flags for stuff like roughing the passer or late hits.
Keys for Page will be to play ball control and basically play mistake free. They will need to play a perfect game to knock off the Panthers. The Page defense will need to stop the Dudley running game and contain QB Ricky Lewis Jr. Page will also need to stay healthy this week during practice and during the game on Friday.
You also have to think about Pages all-state kicker, Matt Millisor. As well as the kicking game in general for both teams. Matt will put the ball into the end zone on kick offs and punt the ball 45-60 yards when he has to. Dudley usually doesnt have a strong kicking game, and in the past has been their downfall against Page. In 03, Page won 14-13 because of a missed PAT, and last year Dudley won 20-14, get on TD and Page potentially wins. Having a kicker that can boom 50 yarders could help late in the game, in field goal tying or winning situations.
Here is a quote from a Ragsdale fan:
Going forward Ragsdale takes on their nemesis Grimsley who they havent beaten since the Reagan years and Page bounces back for the big showdown with Dudley. While Page came up short tonight, after watching the Dudley/Grimsley game, Page can beat Dudley. Not saying that they will but they can. Page has the team speed to play with Dudley
This game has all the makings to become a classic. Its one of those Greensboro Rivalries where each team wants it just as bad as the other. (I.e.

Now as promised the rest of the scores from yesterday's games. Sorry about how late these are - I have been busy putting together what you will see in print in next week's edition of the Valley Record. And I am not done yet - I am waiting on today's game result from Mount Si's girls soccer game, which won't be known until this afternoon.
Anyway, we should start with soccer, and a couple of solid goaltending efforts by local goalies. First, the men. Gonzaga went down to Las Vegas last night and took on UNLV. Fall City's Scott Barnum started in net for the Zags, and picked up the win as Gonazga won 2-1. Barnum stopped three shots. Now, the women. Eastern Washington was out on the praries of South Dakota last night taking on South Dakota State. North Bend's Jess Blessard started in goal for EWU and stopped 12 shots despite still being not 100% after her recent hip injury. That was the most saves by an Eagle GK in two years and was reported by the school on their website to be a personal best. Nice job Jess! Even her coach thought so. Jessica (Blessard) played well in goal and was focused, said EWU Coach George Hageage in a statement on that site.
The rest of the scores:
Volleyball
CWU fell to Truman State (MO) 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-7
CWU's Maggie Olson, North Bend: 5gms, 1 kill, 1 ace, 1blk, 11 digs, 54 as
WSU fell to Wichita State (KS) 25-23, 26-24, 25-21.
WSU's Faith Hutcherson, Ames Lake/Redmond: DNP
WWU beat Bemidji State (MN) 25-21, 29-31, 25-10, 25-19
WWU's Marissa Hill, North Bend: DNP
NWU fell to Oregon Tech 25-16, 25-20, 25-19
NWU's Alisha Larion, North Bend: 3gms, 4 kills, 2 as, 2 digs, 4 blks
Women's Soccer
Carroll (MT) over E Oregon 4-1
Carroll's Jordan Tipton, North Bend came off bench in 58th, played 32 minutes, no stats
Men's Soccer
SPU fell to Metro State (Denver) 4-1
SPU's Jace Derwin, North Bend: DNP
By the way, a score already in the books from today - CWU volleyball fell to SW Minnesota State 15-14, 25-18, 25-11. CWU's Olson: 3gms, 20as, 1ace, 1blk, 8 digs
One more item before I relax for a bit - the Mount Si football game last night was a great game for Mount Si, even though the boys lost, they were much improved. That final score (34-20) does not tell the whole story. This team battled hard, and had a great chance to steal one out of there. I would watch out if I'm Interlake next week.

ECUs Skip Holtz has concerns about facing N.C. State this Saturday and who can blame him:
from the desk of East Carolina Coach Holtz on his Pirates going to Raleigh this week to meet the N.C. State Wolfpack.
On N.C. State:
This is a rival game. This is a game that were excited to have the opportunity to play, especially since its the closest game on our schedule, only being an hour away. We have the opportunity to bump heads with N.C. State from a recruiting standpoint as well.
We played them the last couple of years and were extremely excited to play them again. I dont care what the records are. People talk about them being 1-2, but they came in here at 1-5 last year and beat us 34-20. The records are absolutely irrelevant.
This is a very talented football team. Over the past couple of years, we have tried to recruit most of the players currently on their roster.(Andre Brown?????) When I turn and look at their talent and the game film from last year, I know that weve got one heck of a challenge. We certainly have to play better than we did last week. I think its going to take more of an effort like we put together for West Virginia if we want to have a chance to go over there and have a chance to be successful.
On N.C. States Offense:
I look at their left tackle, Julian Williams, who I remember recruiting. Hes a great young man and a great player. He was one of our No. 1 prospects that we had ear-marked for that year to come in here and help us. Hes an anchor for them at left tackle.
Everybody on their offensive line is a junior or senior, so theyre very experienced. They have two upperclassmen, who they moved in the spring from defensive linemen over to be the guard and the center and I think theyve done a nice job. Its very similar to what we did in our first year when we moved Chris Sellers and Guy Whimper from the defensive line over to the offensive line.
I know theyre [Coaching Staff] trying to put their thumbs in some holes as they walk into a program. I know theyre trying to put their best players on the field and I have been very impressed with some of the moves they have made. I think theyve improved their football team.
I have also been really impressed with Russell Wilson, their quarterback. Hes very athletic and has a strong arm. He hasnt played very much after getting injured in the opener and then not playing in their second game. I think hes a very talented player. I dont think you can evaluate him based on just the Clemson game because of some of the things that Clemson defense does and the way it flies around. But I think hes an excellent football player.
Andre Brown is, again, very talented. Hes a hard runner, big, strong, physical and an upperclassman. Their two receivers, Jarvis Williams and Owen Spencer are tall, athletic, fast and talented players. Theyre going to give us fits. Theyre 6 and 6 and when you look at our cornerbacks, there is definitely a size mismatch walking into this game.
On N.C. States Defense:
When you look at them, Ive been very impressed with Willie Young, the defensive end who gave us fits last year. I believe eight or nine of them are upperclassmen and the sophomores who are playing are some of their better players. Theyre very big and strong upfront and they move very well.
Nate Irving, their middle linebacker, has great speed and is a great player. He is one of those younger players who is stepping up and being really productive for them. I have also been extremely impressed by their two corners, who are probably the best defensive backs we faced to this point. The strength of their defense is probably their pass coverage.
I think they are the best tackling team that we faced all last year. I thought they did a great job of one-on-one tackles last year.
This year they are leading the nation in interceptions and are very athletic and quick. They came in here last year and held us to two yards per carry, 70 yards rushing and they threw for 335 yards against us. You can go on and on about the statistics and what this team did to us a year ago when we played them. Its definitely not one you look at and say, `well were 3-0 and theyre 1-2. The schedules and records are absolutely irrelevant and this is a game that were very excited about stepping in and playing.
On The National Polls:
I dont think what weve done to this point is relevant. As I continue to say, the polls will take care of themselves. Were not worried about those. I think theres one poll that matters, and thats the one that comes out in December. Thats the one well talk about and the one that were striving for. We cant get there today and the only way we can get there is by turning and facing each opponent week by week and thats what were trying to do.
On The Excitement of This Week:
I think weve got to have a really good focus this week in order to go 1-0. I think this is a game that our players are really excited about playing. Theyre revved up for this one. Theres a little bit more energy in these rivalry and geographic games. The spirit is a little bit higher in practice, the attitude is a little bit more upbeat and everybody has a little bit more peep in their step and were excited about having the opportunity to go over to Raleigh and play.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College womens soccer should a lot of heart in earning a 2-2 tie in double overtime against No. 11 Laramie County Community College Wednesday in Cheyenne, Wyo.
And, it was the way the Cougar women played as they faced defeat late, overcoming a 2-0 deficit with under 15 minutes to play to record two goals while out-hustling the Golden Eagle players to the ball.
I cant say enough of how the ladies battled to get back in the match, Rasnic said. We got several key opportunities and Shsy [Williams] did an excellent job of drawing the goal keeper out and putting her in a bad position. She had to foul her and we got the PK and we put it in this time. I just cant say enough about the performance and the heart of these ladies. They are going to go somewhere this year if they continue to play with this kind of heart they played out here tonight.
While the womens team was all smiles with their gutsy performance, the mens team suffered a heartbreaking defeat, falling to LCCC 2-1 in overtime. Te loss snapped the Cougar mens three-game winning streak.
Both games were in tight matches, but it was the womens game that had the most drama. Both womens squads failed to score in the first half. LCCC cracked the scoreboard first as Megan Erickson scored with 36 minutes to play for a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Yala Fowler went one-on-one with WNCCs goal keeper Terri Huntington and won the battle for the 2-0 lead. That goal, however, was the last for the Golden Eagles as Huntington and the rest of the Cougar defense frustrated the Golden Eagle offense.
In fact, Rasnic couldnt have said enough about the play of Huntington late in the game as well as the defense.
Terri did an outstanding job in the net, he said. Also, in every game our defense has stepped up and tonight was no exception. The work of all the backs today was nothing short of heroic. I certainly think we have some good things coming up in the season and we will look forward to each game. We will just come out the next couple times with LCCC and show them we can play with them.
With about 15 minutes to play, the Cougars picked up the pace and scored two goals. The first one with 9:30 to play, was a huge momentum swing. LeeAnna Paxton delivered a pass to Shaylee Williams in front of the net, who hit a shot that squeezed underneath the goal keepers hands and trickled over the line for the score.
The tying goal was even more dramatic. With only 1:53 to play, Williams dribbled the ball to the center of the box, going one-on-one with the goal keeper, who ran into Williams causing a penalty kick. Ana Jacobo too the kick and nailed the shot in the right corner for the tie.
In the first overtime, WNCC had a prime scoring chance with 2:37 to play with a shot on goal that just sailed astray.
In the second overtime, the Cougar defense came up big, including Huntington in net. The Golden Eagles had a free kick about 40 feet from net that went for naught. LCCC also had scoring opportunities twice more, including a corner kick that the Cougar defense stuffed out.
Huntington recorded six saves in the contest. LCCC out shot WNCC 7-5.
Rasnic said he is expecting great things from the womens team after their performance Wednesday.
You will see us improve as the season goes along. That is always our goal, he said. The ladies definitely did an outstanding job tonight, especially coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half of the game. I take my hat off to them.
In the mens game, LCCC scored first in the 38th minute, but the lead was short lived as Morgan Wall tied the game with a shot from in front of the net. Both teams didnt score the rest of the half, or second half to force overtime.
Both teams, however, had a multitude of scoring opportunities in the second half after a 45-minute lightning delay. The best chance for a goal game with 3:20 to play when the Cougars had two opportunities in the box, but couldnt connect for the score.
The Cougars defense also came up big to force overtime as LCCC had three consecutive corner kicks within a minutes time, which the Cougars stuffed out.
In the extra period, LCCC had the first chance for the winning goal with eight minutes to play but it was no good. Two minutes later, Tony Rocha took a pass inside the box and had a prime close shot, which he couldnt get enough on the ball to put it in the net.
LCCC followed with the winning goal with 5:30 remaining in the overtime period as Cameron Shumway scored the winning goal as the Golden Eagles went 2-on-1 with Cougar goal keeper Cesar Bazana.
Even with the loss, Bazana had an excellent game in net, recording nine saves. WNCC had seven shots on goal.
Rasnic said his mens squad needs to learn to play a complete game.
I think the stats showed that we outplayed the opponent, but we struggled again tonight as we have every game with the first half play, he said. If we had played the first half like we played the second half, it probably would have been a different result. For some reason they have to get scored on before we start stepping up and playing the game
Both squads will next be in action Sunday when they host Cloud County Community College at the Landers Soccer Complex. The women kick off at 10 a.m. followed by the mens game at noon.

Bowler Hall is the home of the Bowler First Fridays program, which is planned around the College’s diversity core values and mission statement. So, what is the program, and why is Bowler involved?
Bowler is Hiram’s international-themed housing. Students apply to live here, and one of the requirements is that they are traveling, or have traveled, while at Hiram. Also, all foreign language teaching assistants live in Bowler.
To celebrate the cultural diversity we have on campus, and to introduce some of these elements to the greater College community, the first Friday of every month brings Bowler’s First Friday program. Typically there’s food from the country presenting; a 30-minute presentation of some sort about the country and its culture; and various activities from the country.
This celebration is open to the entire campus community, and all are welcome.
Friday, September 12, at 4:30 p.m. in Bowler Hall first floor, is this fall’s inaugural First Friday. Come learn about Ecuador, eat some tasty food and have fun with Ronaldo Chavez ’10 – who might also just give a salsa dancing lesson.
Watch for the upcoming First Friday celebrations on October 3, November 7, and December 5, too.

I will try and make this quick and painless. Last year, each week I featured the Top Ten at the site and others such as Doug Clark of the News and Record and Ron Green Jr. of the Charlotte Observer have Top Tens. Greens has been around for many years and it runs on Saturdays in the Charlotte paper.
This is the official State-Wide College Football Top Ten and you will ask, why arent some teams ranked higher? They dont deserve to be. Go out and do something special and you will get the push.
Right now Wake Forest is getting the push and Jim Grobe is currently in the ESPN studios doing every type of show in sight. ESPN radio, ESPN 2, ESPN on-line; right now Tuesday September 9 and Jim Grobe is there and so is Wake Forest.
If you want to see the real deal bad enough, you can walk to the Demon Deacon games. Just stay off of the main highway and walk in on 421 South and head down Martin Luther King Blvd. and take Highway 52 to the Stadium.
Wake Forest, this is your team Triad, so let the LOVE show through.
State-Wide Top Ten:
#1) Wake Forest(2-0)This is the Triads team. We have a state NFL team in the Carolina Panthers and I can handle that, but Wake Forest is the Triads top-level team and ALL need to fall in line. Gene Hackman said it and you need to listen, This is YOUR TEAM.
#2) East Carolina(2-0)Very close to Wake and I would actually pay $2.00 out of my own pocket to watch ECU and WFU play this Saturday. I am booked up with public appearances after that. Remember, I dont care about national polls, this is the only poll that counts.
#3) N.C. AThe Aggies are back with wins over Johnson C. Smith and Winston-Salem State and you all said that Coach Lee Fobbs couldnt get it done.(I said it too, and I like this crowd.)
#4) Guilford College(2-0)Very impressive win on Saturday in the Soup Bowl vs. Greensboro College. Quaker QB Josh Vogelbach passed for 340 yards and 2TDs.
#5) Appalachian State(1-1)The Mountaineers evened their record at (1-1) with that 56-7 victory over Jacksonville.
#6)TIE:UNC-Pembroke(2-0) and Lenior Rhyne(2-0)The Braves have defeated Brevard 28-0 and Davidson 21-9. The LR Bears have rolled in their first two games.
#8)UNC-Chapel Hill(1-0)Heels won their opener over McNeese State and now face Rutgers on the road Thursday night.
#9)DukeThe Blue Devils 24-20 loss to Northwestern spoiled the early-season fun but at one-and-one the offense is there, they just need to shore up the defense.
#10)TIE:N.C. State(1-1) and Elon(1-1)With the 34-24 win over William and Mary, Tom OBrien and staff are doing things the right way in Raleigh, but it does take time. Scott Riddle the Elon quarterback still has it, going 26-42 for 261 yards and 3TDs in the Phoenix win last Saturday.
It is a battle between Riley Skinner of Wake, Patrick Pinkney from East Carolina, Scott Riddle out of Ramseur at Elon and Josh Vogelbach at Guilford College to see who is the best college quarterback in the state. Armanti Edwards at Appalachian has dropped off a bit here to start the 2008 season.
Theres the first poll and next week we wont have as much to say, we will focus more on ranking the teams and dont forget forget to support the Triads team, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. They made the Triad proud with their win on National TV last Saturday.

TOP FORWARDS:
(Criterion)
1. 8 plus points per game
2. 4 rebounds per game
3. 1.5 steals per game
4. 2.0 assists per game
5. 1.0 blocks per game
Elisha Hairston Sr. Reidsville: Conference Player of Year, First Team All Conference Tournament, Second Team All Area, Conference Tournament MVP. Elisha is probably the smoothest forward in the city. She has a nice fluid movement that allows her to stand tall amongst the others. She is the catalyst for her team. She handles the ball well and can create matchup problems. Very athletic and is a double-double performer. Played very well for the Phoenix AAU team this past summer especially at an event in front of major college scouts at UNCG. Helped her team advance to the Championship round of the Sectionals and help guide team to a conference tie for first place with Eastern Guilford. A mid major to high major recruit. A five tier player: 22 pts, 15 rebs, 6.9 assists, 6 blocks, 5.5 steals.
Semantha Coffer Soph. Northern: A double-double performer who helped lead Northern in its first year of highschool competition. Made All Conference and Third team All Area. Very smooth operator that shoots left handed. Had a game high of 27 points this year. If Helen Terry or Krystal Moore slip during the year and Northern improves tremendously over last year and her numbers either remain the same or increase slightly, she could easily become the Conference Player of the Year. A mid major to high major prospect at this stage.Did a great job for the Phoenix AAU squad this past summer. A five tier player: 16 points, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks, 2 assists, 2 steals.
Victoria Davis Jr. Forsyth: Had a super year. Had a season high of 30 points in a game. A fierce competitor with tremendous hustle. Selected to the All Conference Team and All Area team in Winston Salem. Had a good year for the Galaxy AAU team. A good rebounder who can score in the paint. Has improved on ball handling skills and plays good defense. A physical player that sets the tone for her team. A low major prospect at this stage. A four tier player. 13 ppg, 6 rebs, 2 steals, 2 assist.
Andria Walker Sr. Eastern Alamance: Mid- State Player of the Year made her presence known whenever she was on the court. With out performance Eastern Alamance does not make a run to the Eastern Regional semifinals. An assuming type player that gets the job done. Walking the River, a film written and directed by two Hiram graduates, Ryan Rodriguez (1999, English major with an emphasis in writing and photography minor) and Jonathan Shick (2000, business major), will be shown at Hiram College on Tuesday, September 9, in the Gelbke Art Building at 9:40 a.m. A discussion will follow.
Along with Ryan Weibush, Rodriguez and Shick travel the Cuyahoga River from Cleveland into Northeast Ohio’s industrial valley, walk into national parks, discover wildlife and interview eccentric people, consider the complex watershed of the Cuyahoga River, as well as water quality issues, and paddle to the rapidly developing rural origins of the river. Complex environmental issues are addressed as stories about the river’s fiery past blend with current observations the three men make on their canoe trip. Walking the River is produced by Blue Hole Productions and funded by the George Gund Foundation, the Cleveland Foundation, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association, and the Doll Family Foundation.
Walking the River premiered on August 15, 2008, at the Happy Days Lodge in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, to an audience of 300 people. A date has been set for WVIZ broadcast in early November, along with another large show at the Westfield Theater at Ideastream in downtown Cleveland.
Please contact Joyce Dyer with any questions you might have about the Hiram showing, or contact Ryan at rodriguezrk@blueholeproductions.org or Jonathan at shickjs@blueholeproductions.org.

Hi, everybody,
Time now for our second weekend preview of the college sports season, and this weekend really gets the action underway. First a quick update on Scott Barnum, from Fall City who we had told you here had transferred to Gonzaga from Whitworth. Gonzaga now has its 2008 roster up, and he is on it, and considering that the other two goalkeepers on the Zags men's soccer team are both freshmen, chances are he will be starting if he isn't sitting out as per any transfer regs. With that said, here's this weekend's schedule of action we'll be following here, and there is a LOT of it!!
Tomorrow 8-29:
Volleyball: Northwest U (Alisha Larion) vs Holy Names of CA, 10:00am in Portland, OR
Central Wash U (Maggie Olson) vs Grand Canyon of AZ, 12 noon in Carson, CA
Hope Int'l U (S. Schirmer?) vs Coll. of St. Mary of NE, 1:00 pm at Concordia U in CA*
Washington State (Faith Hutcherson) vs CSU-Northridge, 3:00 pm in Boise
Hope Int'l U vs Jamestown of ND, 5:00pm at Concordia U in CA*

Soccer: Eastern Wash women (Jess Blessard) vs LA-Lafayette, 2:00 pm in El Paso, TX
Gonzaga men (Scott Barnum) @ Creighton, 5:30 pm in Omaha, NE
Saturday 8-30:

Sunday 8-31:
Soccer: Eastern Wash women vs Texas State, 9:00am in El Paso, TX
Carroll of MT women @ Evergreen State, 6:00pm in Olympia
Monday 9-1: LABOR DAY!!!!
Soccer: Western Wash men vs CSU Dominguez Hills, 7:00pm in Bellingham
TV-Radio Info: UW Football game on Fox Sports Net TV and on KJR AM 950 radio in Seattle
EWU Football game on KITZ (Bremerton) and KGTK (Olympia) AM radio; EWU does not have a Seattle radio affiliate
Consult each school's website to see if they have internet coverage of matches. A lot of the smaller schools don't have it, but some of the bigger ones might.
We note Schirmer with a ? next to her name, this is because we still don't know if she is on their roster there @ HIU. They played last night and were swept in 3 games in their season opening match, but there are NO stats available for the contest, and there apparently won't be due to a computer glitch, according to the UGF website.
As you can see, there will be a good amount of local talent potentially on display this weekend in various college sports.
Then next week, not only do we have more college action, but the start of the high school fall sports season, next Friday night your Mount Si Wildcats are home against Eastlake on the gridiron. Should be fun. With that in mind, I should let all of you know to pick up a copy of next week's Valley Record for all of your fall sports team previews.

If any of you forwarded the original post to your significant others, this one might get you out of the doghouse. Ladies, if your college football guy proudly printed and pasted the first on the fridge as a daily reminder, you have every right to do the same with this response.
Here is the female response to these .
1. We will give you control of the TV from August through December. We will limit our complaining. In return, we control the TV for the rest of the year, and can watch HGTV and Food Network anytime. You will limit your complaining.
2. We will crawl on the floor so as not to interrupt your viewing, but you will be expected to vacuum all the crumbs, dirt, and dog hairs we will naturally see upon such close examination the following morning.
3. Well read the sports section or pretend to know what you are talking about. But, about this yelling thing? Do not talk to the players on TV, especially in first names. You dont know these people, so you are most definitely not on a first name basis with them – no matter how good or bad the play is. Besides, it calls us to seriously question your sanity, and wed hate for you to be locked up in a mental hospital and miss the Poinsettia Bowl.
4. You can be as drunk as you want during the game and well oblige, but you will still be expected to help us with whatever we need on Sunday (or Friday, or Saturday) morning. How early it is depends on how drunk and obnoxious you are – the drunker, the earlier.
5. We will gladly keep a stocked fridge of Bud Light Lime and fresh vegetables and fruit for you to snack on until your heart is content.
6. First, honey, you are in the South, and we do know as much about football as you. We understand that it is more than a game. If you need help expressing your anger and frustration, well let you clean the house, run errands, and such. That is how we regularly work out our frustrations with our husbands, and it works, because we do not have 10 Commandments to help wives survive life with husbands.
7. Did you say gifts?
8. Well, as much as I would like to, I really cant control when babies are born. It would seem, according to your commandments, that you are only able to drink, watch TV and yell from August through bowl season. One can infer that the act that results in babies must be saved for January through April, which, according to the laws of nature, inevitably results in babies being born in Football Season. So either you (and your cohorts) give in some during football season, or you go to baby showers when I request, k?
9. Umm, if halftime is a chance for you to go check scores of other games on the internet or call your buddies to talk about the games, then it is also a chance for me to say whatever I have held in for the past hour and a half. And, this one can go both ways. Herbstriet is good looking, and I am particularly interested in what he has to say. He is, to us women, what Erin Andrews is to you men. So, shut up and Ill shut up.
10. Yes, dear, we know you are immune to it. There is a fantasy team starting every other month. The ESPN ticker image is burned on to our TV. The computer is overheating from your furious surfing to all the sports sites. We say this because we know it pushes your buttons. Im just glad it only lasts a few months.

from David Poole of the Charlotte Observer:
It was Aug. 29 of last year when I got wind that Bruton Smith was seriously thinking about building a drag strip at Lowes Motor Speedway. I called Smith to check it out and was literally putting luggage into the car to go to the airport to fly to the race in California when Smith called back and said that was indeed something he was thinking seriously about.
Three days later, I was in a hotel in California. I know it was Saturday because the Appalachian State-Michigan football game was under way. I was flipping through my e-mail and saw that the National Hot Rod Association had put out a 2008 schedule that included at to be announced race on Sept. 11-14. Curious, I thought. Wonder what thats all about? Shampoo was running into my eyes when it finally hit me what was going on.
I thought about all of that Wednesday morning while sitting in one of the four racing lanes at zMAX Dragway @ Concord, the $60 million facility that the public got to see for the first time at an open house on Saturday. Its amazing what you can get up out of the ground with dollar bills as fertilizer.
A year ago the story was that the NHRA would have its track in Gainesville, Fla., on standby in case things didnt get done in time here. But I learned years ago never to doubt what people with money and determination can do. I am writing this column from Bristol Motor Speedway, and all I have to do to get a reminder of that is close my eyes and remember what this place looked like the first time I came in the spring of 1997.
You might not like the way Smith does business. You might not care for the way he backed Concord into a corner by threatening to move Lowes Motor Speedway if he didnt get his way with the drag strip. Not everybody is going to be happy with how the drag strip fits into the neighborhood and people who feel like theyre having their lives interrupted are entitled to be upset and bitter about how things turned out. But from a motorsports perspective, adding drag racings top series to the Charlotte areas sports menu is a big step forward. Charlotte, Concord and the surrounding areas now have four weekends filled with major national-level events, which bring visitors and competitors and television cameras and all kinds of attention and economic impact. The new drag strip is, by acclamation, the finest facility of its kind anywhere.
Im going to the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis next week to get ready for the Carolina Nationals. Ill be meeting new people and bringing you some of their stories while learning, along with some of you, the ins and outs of a different kind of racing. Drag racing gets a lot of stuff right. Every ticket is a pit pass, and drivers make themselves accessible to fans as much as possible during a weekend. Teams work on their cars where fans can watch them, and during the 75-minute break between rounds Top Fuel and Funny Car teams literally rebuild their engines in what amounts to a NASCAR pit stop that lasts about an hour.
A fan who thinks a stock-car race is just watching cars go around in circles doesnt understand theres more to the whole experience, and drag racing takes that to a different level altogether. The midway at a national event includes manufacturer and sponsor displays as well as the kind of concessions you might find at the state fair. Ive said it before that an NHRA midway might be the only place in the world where you can buy a funnel cake, an Ashley Force T-shirt and a new set of cylinder heads while walking less than 100 yards.
Like anything else, of course, drag racing has its issues.
