Octopuses are characterized by their eight arms usually bearing suction cups. These arms are a type of muscular hydrostat. Unlike most other cephalopods, the majority of octopuses those in the suborder most commonly known, Incirrina which means it have almost entirely soft bodies with no internal skeleton. They have neither a protective outer shell like the nautilus, nor any vestige of an internal shell or bones, like cuttlefish or squid. A beak, similar in shape to a parrots beak, is the only hard part of their body. This enables them to squeeze through very narrow slits between underwater rocks, which is very helpful when they are fleeing from morays or other predatory fish. The octopuses in the less familiar Cirrina suborder have two fins and an internal shell, generally reducing their ability to squeeze into small spaces.

Of the nine dismissals in the U.S. attorney scandal, the firing of former New Mexico U.S. Atty. David Iglesias was probably the most blatantly partisan.
A Justice Dept. inspector general report released last week concluded that Iglesias was forced to leave because he didnt pursue public corruption and voter fraud cases that New Mexico Republicans wanted him to prosecute.
Now, 22 months after his dismissal, Iglesias said in a phone interview that the IG report vindicates his repeated assertion that he was fired for improper and possibly illegal reasons.

Other legislative bodies that choose to allow gambling online will also have to ponder how to handle non reporting of internet gambling revenue by players. From what Ive read everywhere and heard across the airwaves, it seems that Sarah Palins lack of direct experience in foreign policy and complex financial structuring makes her a One would conclude that lack of experience in what ordinarily would be a lifetime career means that one should be sidelined as a complete fool.
Following that logic, since Ive got no experience at all in flying a plane, I would be a joke.
Well, thats not really true, nor is it really what people are saying. Its one way to use language and logic to create an appearance. On the other hand, those making the comment are adding in a second piece of logic. Since Sarah Palin is applying for the job of foreign policy and financial structuring leadership, and since she has no experience in either of these areas of expertise, therefore her application for the job is a joke.
The key questions here involve the meaning of executive leadership, and whether or not Sarah Palin is applying for the job of Secretary of State, or the head of the Federal Reserve. To my knowledge, no, shes not.
Interestingly enough, theres quite a substantial difference between someones application being a joke, and the person themselves being a joke. But, where it comes to liberal opposition, lets not quibble. Lets not split hairs. Lets not get all caught up in
Only a fool would believe that executive-level and board-level strategic thinkers should have expert knowledge in every field under their management. Bill Gates has some basic knowledge of programming, but that isnt why Microsoft became the most powerful and influential enterprise of the 20th century.
And far more importantly, the CEO and Board of Directors are not fully charged with the strategic thinking and planning! The true function of the high-level executive management is to make decisions! Those decisions take into account the recommendations and scenarios developed by hired experts. But those experts are not charged with making a decision.
The President and Vice President of the United States are not being hired to develop tactical solutions. Theyre being hired to take the full responsibility of making final decisions as to what actually to do in situations involving the future and continuation of the entire country.
The critical expertise for a decision-maker is just that, their experience in making irrevocable decisions. Its the fact that the decisions dont allow that calls to question the character, values, philosophies, and fundamental nature of candidates.
Barack Obama has repeatedly shown that he cannot or will not make critical decisions. He votes more often than not, rarely makes clear statements of what exactly should take place, and has never indicated what his underlying philosophy is for making decisions.
The reason Sarah Palin has captured the imagination of so many people is that she is decisive, isnt afraid to stand by her decisions, and clearly states her core values. Those values inform all her thinking and decision process. America is tired of flim-flam politicians without values, whose decision-making process is the public opinion poll.
Executives are charged with defining the overall direction for the organization. Their job is to manage the strategic plan, keep the enterprise best interests in mind, continue the leading position of that enterprise, and grow the business. EVERYTHING else is the job and business of their expert advisors, management team, tactical planners, and production line.
To say that the President of the United States must first have expert knowledge of every process involved in the day-to-day operations of the country is ridiculous. What fundamentally matters is that the President (and by assocation, Vice President) must have a strategic vision for the future of the nation.
A strategic vision is exactly that; a vision! Such a vision, which becomes a plan, can be built either on values and a moral structure, or built on wishes and dreams. Either way, when interviewing a candidate for the position of CEO, the key questions are more about the quality of their decisions, how they arrived at those decisions, and the resulting consequences of those decisions.
Barack Obama has routinely made decisions, only to discover that they were the wrong decision. When confronted with the results, based on what actually happens in reality (not someones delusions), Mr. Obama has either denied that he made the original decision, or tried to say that everyone can be wrong and he would have made a different decision had he known the future. His main regret, apparently, is that he isnt experienced in clairvoyance!
When Bill Gates went to capitalize Microsoft, the lenders werent all that interested in whether or not he understood the ins and outs of Wall Street, and whether or not hed ever taken a company public. There are specialists who can be hired, whose job it is to guide the company through an IPO.
Likewise, the captains of the worlds largest ships and tankers, in almost all cases will bring on a pilot with special knowledge of a particular port, when bringing that ship in for docking. Sarah Palin isnt required to have any special expertise on the details of foreign policy, international business, investment banking, money supplies, fighting terrorism, and running a national military. There are experts who already know all about those fields.
Nobody believes that Barack Obama is an expert on international politics or financial management. It doesnt matter because he, like McCain, Palin, and Biden dont need to be an expert on these fields! But what experts will Obama choose to make recommendations? Will he include recommendations opposed to his ideology? Will he be objective in his analysis? And fundamentally, what is the Obama vision for the future of America?
Nobody knows; its a mystery.
John McCain and Sarah Palin (his backup) are required to make irrevocable decisions with far-reaching consequences. Those consequences will not only affect all Americans right now, but will affect the United States into the future across many generations. Its the irrevocablity of these crucial decisions that matters! There wont be any if a bad decision about terrorists leads to a nuclear explosion over New York City.

This rule gave basic strategy players a small edge over the house right off the top, without any card counting whatsoever! And the advantage to card counters was even greater. From opening day, card counters had a field day at Resorts tables. Ironically, as word spread through the gambling community that card counters found the Resorts blackjack game to be the most lucrative game for players in the country, gamblers from all over the world - most of whom knew nothing about basic strategy or card counting - flocked to their tables.
A team of professional blackjack players whose founders were from Czechoslovakia that had been playing in Las Vegas flew all of their members to Atlantic City to take advantage of this new surrender rule. A New Jersey college student named Tommy Hyland, who had just turned twenty-one, started going to Atlantic City in 1978 when he heard about the favorable black-jack game at Resorts. Hylands team continues to this day as one of the most successful casino gambling operations in history.
It was also in 1978 that the first MIT blackjack team was started. This team actually consisted of students from MIT, Harvard, and other East Coast colleges. Johnny C.j now a legendary player who joined the team in 1981, plays high-stakes blackjack to this day and continues organizing teams of professional players. College kids found that they could pool their money, play blackjack with a modicum of intelligence, and get rich quick. In fact, it was a combination of that easy-to-beat early surrender game and Ken Ustons The Big Player that had just been published in 1977 that worked together to create an environment where new teams of smart young kids could make millions playing blackjack.

I dreamt the other night of being at a casino. I sat at a $5 per hand blackjack table and began playing. As the dealer flipped the cards across the felt strange events started to happen. Each time I lost a hand the other casino patrons would take up a collection to cover my loss. Then someone would rush over to add more chips to my stack. But each time I won I got to keep the money. I simply put the chips I won in my pocket. Wow, I thought; I should try this at a more expensive table.
I moved to a $10 per hand table and the same thing happened. Next I tried $50 per hand and then $100. No matter how large a bet I placed or how long a particular losing streak lasted, the lost chips would magically reappear. But, any win was mine to keep and no one seemed to care. An attractive waitress came to offer a drink. I asked for some Grand Marnier and tipped her with a $100 chip. She rushed back with the drink, a seductive smile and a food menu. I kicked back and doubled-down on a hand blackjack players call a hard-16. (Yes, I know that is a stupid play, but I might win and it doesnt cost me when I lose.) I think Ill just stay here. No need to go back home and return to that activity called work.
Then I awoke and regained my senses. Real life isnt like that; or so I thought. I made some coffee and as I sipped and savored the aroma my eyes focused on the morning newspaper. I read about the government bailing out near bankrupt companies with names ending in Mae and Mac. Wait, I must still be dreaming. Is the caffeine working this morning?
Indymac, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were run as private companies with stockholders and highly compensated executives. The executives made a series of large questionable bets on real estate that for several years paid off handsomely. But now fortunes have changed and the bets are losing big time. Like many problem gamblers, these executives did not know how to control risk, stay within a budget, or quit before going completely broke. But it didnt matter to them because while they got to keep their winnings for the bets that paid off, ordinary citizens are being forced to take up a collection to cover the bets that lost.
Government talk and action on the financial crisis caused by bad loans is completely disingenuous. Political leaders extol the virtues of free, unregulated, private enterprise motivated by profit seeking executives and corporations. But when these private businesses fail, our leaders tell us that taxpayers must step in to prevent the entire financial system from collapse. It turns out that the Maes and Macs performed a necessary public service, much like a utility. But Marylanders already know what happens when utilities are deregulated and run for profit. We pay extra on our electric bills every month for that improvement.
IndyMac grew rapidly during the real estate boom by specializing in so-called loans. These loans did not require homebuyers to actually document the income or assets they claimed. After its failure the FBI launched an investigation of the company for possible fraud. Im just shocked, shocked to think that without documentation, bank officials might have just made up the numbers on loan documents.
Private enterprise works well with private money. But, in the mortgage business we have a system that allows private gain to accrue from risking unlimited amounts of taxpayer money. The result is that since March authorities have indicted more than 400 people who worked in the real estate industry. We the taxpayers are now footing the bill for massive amounts of collusion and outright fraud.
In Maryland, I know of no legal blackjack games. Neither the state nor federal governments trusts its citizens to play the game responsibly. But, while casino blackjack is stacked against the player, at least its regulated in states where it is allowed. Many tax-paying citizens were financially ruined in the poorly regulated real estate market. But, the government says that they should have made more responsible choices. Do they think this is a dream world.

Its a fact that the legalization of some forms of gambling paved the way for the construction of gaming establishments catering for these services everywhere both public and private. While some argue that gambling forms part of social ills the public have to deal with, indeed, the many benefits gambling contributes far outweighs the social costs it generates.
Gambling has become increasingly popular. According to the Minnesota Department of Human Services survey (2003), more than 80 percent of U.S. adults have engaged once in gambling in the previous year. This figure alone gives you an idea how much money is generated from this commerce.
There are a considerable number of legal forms of gambling and innumerable places to look for them but before jumping into those busy tables lets have some checklists determining which works best for you without you getting into trouble.
• Casinos are the way to go - If you would like to experience something more personal, land based casinos are the best place to go. Casinos accommodate majority of the most popular gambling activities. You can play games of all sorts from poker to slot machines.
• Stop, Look, and Listen! - More often than not friends and acquaintances provide you valuable information and help you decide which place is best place to sweat on that excitement.
• Go high-tech - Latest research shows that 2 out of 25 Internet users have wagered on gaming centers online. Love casinos but do not have much of time to travel? Try it online.
• Watch out for Software! - Legitimate gaming companies openly inform the public which gaming software they use to operate on their respective sites. Among those that still remain popular and are protected by gaming policies are Bossmedia, Wagerlogic, and Microgaming although some use Playtech or Cryptologic. Keep away from Iglobalmedia, Electra Games, Handa-Lopez.
• Lottery - For most of us who cannot afford casinos, there are still another way to lash that bet! Lottery is the answer. This form of gambling is perhaps largely participated and the cheapest way to put wager on. Select and win!
• Gamble with Sports - If you love both worlds, a handful of organized sports events like football or baseball allows you to place your bets on your favorite team through official wagers or bookmakers. In fact a handful of card games made their way to sports. One of them is Poker while others are still being played in-house such as Baccarat.
• Gamble Responsibly - While it’s true that we gamble for entertainment, we cannot underestimate the fact that some are predisposed to addiction. Laid down the money you afford to lose and stop ahead.

Two columnists make some good points about the Financial meltdown: All of which the voters should consider.
Paul Krugman: THE THREE AM CALL
“It’s the 3 AM call. It’s 3 a.m., a few months into 2009, and the phone in the White House rings. Several big hedge funds are about to fail, says the voice on the line, and there’s likely to be chaos when the market opens. Whom do you trust to take that call?
The bailout plan released yesterday is a lot better than the proposal Henry Paulson first put out — sufficiently so to be worth passing. But it’s not what you’d actually call a good plan, and it won’t end the crisis. The odds are that the next president will have to deal with some major financial emergencies.
So what do we know about the readiness of the two men most likely to end up taking that call? Well, Barack Obama seems well informed and sensible about matters economic and financial. John McCain, on the other hand, scares me.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/29/opinio n/29krugman.html?em
Queen’s Comments: I agree Mr. Krugman. I would rather have someone who graduated magna cum laude from Harvard steering the ship of state through troubled financial waters than a man who graduated fourth from the bottom of his graduating class of almost 900 students and who has a person for a running mate who has difficulty putting together a complete sentence.
Frank Rich: MCCAIN’S SUSPENSION
IDGE TO NOWHERE
WHAT we learned last week is that the man who always puts his “country first” will take the country down with him if that’s what it takes to get to the White House. For all the focus on Friday night’s deadlocked debate, it still can’t obscure what preceded it: When John McCain gratuitously parachuted into Washington on Thursday; he didn’t care if his grandstanding might precipitate an even deeper economic collapse. All he cared about was whether he might save his campaign. . . By the time he arrived, there already was a bipartisan agreement in principle. It collapsed hours later at the meeting convened by the president in the Cabinet Room.
Rather than help try to resuscitate Wall Street’s bloodied bulls, McCain was determined to be the bull in Washington’s legislative china shop, running around town and playing both sides of his divided party against Congress’s middle. Once others eventually forged a path out of the wreckage, he’d inflate, if not outright fictionalize, his own role in cleaning up the mess his mischief helped make. Or so he hoped, until his ignominious retreat.
The question is why would a man who forever advertises his own honor toy so selfishly with our national interest at a time of crisis.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/opinio n/28rich.html?em
Queen’s Comment: I agree with Rich that McCain did dash into Washington and stir up partisan politics. That is the Republican speak: whatever they say they are doing, they are really doing the opposite.
QUEEN’S CONCLUSION
Both columnists make the same important point: The financial deal that Congressional leaders had made with the White House was not that good. It was better than what Bush and Paulson were offering, but it was still not that good.
Why should we settle for a plan that almost every economist in the country is telling is less than a band aid on a hemorrhage? Because they tell us that the sky is falling is not reason enough. We’ve heard that tale before.
Why should the American people fork over $700 billion for a plan that most agree will not work?
And more importantly why should the American people be asked to trust $700billion of our money with friends and members of the Bush Administration—the administration who is most responsible for this meltdown, the administration who has told the American people one lie after another for eight years. And now Congress (conservative Democrats and the Bush Administration) come up with a plan that puts these people in charge of $700billion dollars.
Largest Problem with their Plan is a Credibility Gap between the Voters and the People who created this plan. For more than 30 years now Republicans, aided by conservative Democrats, have led this nation and its people around like a bull with a ring in its nose. It is time for REAL CHANGE and this plan is not an example of real change. It won’t work and Americans know that. It is more of throwing good money after bad. You don’t have to be a genius to understand that. You don’t have to be a genius to understand that the trough, along with the American’s pocketbooks will be empty in a few months. We need to repair the root cause, not the symptoms.
They need to go back to the drawing board and make some plans that are acceptable to the American peoplenot just to the rich. They need to ramp up the amps on progressive. But my guess is that they are blind to how deep that the American people have dug their heels in on this one. My guess that, instead of changing a thing about the bill, they will instead try to arm twist House members into changing their minds. If any of these people do make changes they will make it in favor of conservative Republicans instead of progressive Democrats because that is what they have done for the past 30 years.
At the least, I take comfort in knowing that more Americans are better understanding the kind of politics that Washington plays and I for one am glad that we have not yet voted. The arm-twisters might want to keep this in mind if they are counting on 25 representatives to change their minds.

Kaine last Friday in which 86 Virginia Pastors vowed to mobilize their people to vote, in response to the Kaine Administrations verbal ban on public prayer in Jesus' name, which forced 6 State Police Chaplains to resign.
Copies of the letter, with the names of 86 pledging Virginia Pastors, (and the details of what they want), will be available to all press or media personnel who personally attend on October 1st. All others may view the letter (on October 2nd) at www.PrayInJesusName.org.
Depending on Gov. Kaines response to this letter, the unified Pastors are contemplating bringing their churches together for a state-wide prayer-rally to honor the chaplains, entitled Virginia, Stand Up For Jesus, on November 1st at 10am at the Capitol Square Bell Tower, (900 Bank Street), Richmond, within earshot of the Governors Mansion, just three days before the election.
This could impact the national election, since Virginia is such a close race, said Former Navy Chaplain Klingenschmitt. These 86 Pastors pledged to mobilize their people to vote accordingly, so the courage of these six Police Chaplains who were forced to resign because they prayed 'in Jesus name,' could turn America's head on November 4th. Just imagine if all churches in Virginia united at a prayer-rally to Stand Up For Jesus on November 1st, near the Governor's mansion. But first, we'll wait to see how Gov. Kaine responds to our letter.

You will hear about all kinds of risks that are taken when playing the stock market game. There are high-risk stocks and investments along with many low risk mutual funds and everything in between. When it comes to high-risk investment options, penny stocks often top the charts as some of the highest risks you will find in investment circles. Of course, they also offer some of the highest yield of any other stocks as well because the prices start so low and the sky is literally the limit. Do not get stars in your eyes however when considering penny stocks as investments because there are many that have gone before you into that type of investment and relatively few that have come back from the brink as wealthy men and women.
Of course reason is rarely a good bedfellow for ambition or dreams and the low prices of most penny stocks its perfectly acceptable for even the common man to have a few dreams of his own when it comes to obtaining wealth by playing the stock market game and there is a much greater thrill with penny stocks than you will find in any casino with penny slots.
Some of the common risks associated with penny stocks may not be risks one would commonly assume are related to the stock market. The thing you need to remember is that trading penny stocks isnt regulated in the manner that the major stock exchanges are regulated. This means that a large safety net that others in the stock market are protected, to some degree, by does not extend into the murky waters of penny stock trading. It is the forgotten child of oversight and investors are left to fend for themselves.
The first risk is fraud and this risk seems to be rampant in the penny stock market. You will find all kinds of fraudulent penny stocks that are heavily marketed by overseas companies that look glossy and legitimate on the Internet, in investment magazines, and through many brochures, and even several carefully crafted and well written press releases, newsletters, and emails. The problem is that there is no product or the demand is deceptively overrated and the stocks are essentially junk stocks worth nothing, if they exist at all. The in question take the money, dump, and run never to be heard from again. Unfortunately this is quite common and many of the that perpetrate the frauds are located overseas. This is the biggest risk though certainly not the only risk
The other risk is that the companies that are listing penny stocks are often smaller businesses that are building or larger businesses that have fallen off the major exchanges radar for one reason or another and are either going through desperate restructuring or failing all together. Both pose very real risks but if you choose to put your faith in the right new business or old business that is getting its act together the proper way you can find amazing profits on the other end of the roller coaster ride.
The other risks that are involved when trading penny stocks are the lack of financial reporting. Corporations and companies that trade in the major stock exchanges are required to release their financial information and account to their stockholders. The same doesnt hold true for penny stocks. There is no accountability and very little public information. This means you have to really dig to find out credible information about the companies you are considering and are left going with your gut more often than not rather than relying on legitimate information that will be beneficial in your investment decisions.
Penny stocks are very lucrative to those who manage to pull off the investments and come out ahead. There are few instances in which there is little profit with the lions share of these investments yielding substantial profits for investors.

Jim Bisso sent me a question:
I've been embattled by a bunch of peevologists over the grammaticality of sentences of the sort: "my mother(,) she is a good person". I have pointed out that many kinds of apposition are not only acceptable but flow from the pens of some of our finest writers, but they are having none of that. Somehow a construction like "we the people of the United States etc." is okay, but reverse the order of Pron + NP to NP + Pron and sparks start to fly. I say it's simply a stylistic matter and not a syntactic one, but who am I? What say you? (Do you know any monographs that I might delve into to fuel my argument?)
Executive summary: This construction goes back to Old English, and is still widely used in spoken English and in some regional varieties ; but its use in formal written English has been decreasing since about 1500, and is now either informal or archaic.

It's Karma that John McCain appears to be in a coping emergency. His campaign masters must think it's the perfect opportunity to let voters see McCain taking the reins to show he can be a Big Deal Leader.
Economic crisis? The world depending on the U.S. to right our financial house, and theirs?
This is the time. Go, Boy!! Go John, Go John... Now is the time to show them what you're made of. Take control! I can hear McCain's handlers urging their boy on.
We don't need that nasty debate. No we-tell-you-what-to-do-via-the-same-bulg e-in-your-back-jacket-that-worked-so-wel l-with-Little-Georgie-during-that-debate. Let's not bother. Just say NO! What's good enough for Nike is good enough for John McCain, folks. Let's just say, 'My Friends, This Is No Time For Games And Debate Parties.'
Can you just imagine the scenario if John McCain became President?
Oh, come'on, Steve, why can't I just let Sarah go handle that? Why do I have to deal with two wars at the same time and still deal with other foreign leaders? It's too much at one time. That's okay, Johnnie, we'll just announce that due to the seriousness of the news from the war front, you will postpone having the State Dinner for the President from a South American country who's postponeable. It's not like he's in on the big action.
One month later:
I don't want to go down to New Orleans yet again. I know we scheduled a big press conference there, but there's a crisis in New York about approving the plans for the monument at Ground Zero. Remember what that did for Rudy's popularity? I can't do both of these things this week. That's okay, Johnnie, we'll just announce that due to the gravity of the cavity at 9/11ville, you're postponing your trip to the Big Easy. No Problemo!
One month later:
Let's ask Al Quaeda if they will postpone terrorism, saying we'll agree to do the same, till the economy is healthier. We can do that, right? I'm the President!
That's okay, Johnnie, sure you are. We'll just send some more soldiers and no one will notice there's a postponement. Time to get you and Sarah up to speed, My Friend. The new school season starts Monday, classes at 9am.Oh Steve, you're so good to me. Now if I can only postpone walking while I chew my gum.
Or, just maybe, Johnny's getting cold feet about his debate date Friday night?
Obama might not let Johnnie get away with this one.

Senator John McCain was on a roll. In a room reserved for high-stakes gamblers at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, he tossed $100 chips around a hot craps table. When the marathon session ended around 2:30 a.m., the Arizona senator and his entourage emerged with thousands of dollars in winnings.
As a two-time chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, Mr. McCain has done more than any other member of Congress to shape the laws governing America’s casinos, helping to transform the once-sleepy Indian gambling business into a $26-billion-a-year behemoth with 423 casinos across the country. He has won praise as a champion of economic development and self-governance on reservations.
As factions of the ferociously competitive gambling industry have vied for an edge, they have found it advantageous to cultivate a relationship with Mr. McCain or hire someone who has one, according to an examination based on more than 70 interviews and thousands of pages of documents.
Mr. McCain portrays himself as a Washington maverick unswayed by special interests, referring recently to lobbyists as “birds of prey.” Yet in his current campaign, more than 40 fund-raisers and top advisers have lobbied or worked for an array of gambling interests — including tribal and Las Vegas casinos, lottery companies and online poker purveyors.

He appeared in some 60 films - including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Hustler, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Sting - earning him nine Oscar nominations for acting and the best actor honour for 1986s The Color of Money.
The movie heart-throb created Newmans Own Foundation, a private independent foundation, to carry on his commitment of donating to charity all profits and royalties he earns from the sale of Newmans Own products.
The foundations vice-chairman, Robert Forrester, paid tribute, saying: Paul Newmans craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.
Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in ones life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance.
He continued: An exceptional example is the legacy of Newmans Own. What started as something of a joke in the basement of his home, turned into a highly-respected, multi-million dollar a year food company.
And true to form, he shared this good fortune by donating all the profits and royalties he earned to thousands of charities around the world, a total which now exceeds $250 million.
While his philanthropic interests and donations were wide-ranging, he was especially committed to the thousands of children with life-threatening conditions served by the Hole in the Wall Camps, which he helped start over 20 years ago.
He saw the camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back, and raise a little hell. Today, there are 11 camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam.
Through the camps, well over 135,000 children have had the chance to experience what childhood was meant to be.
The actor himself said: I wanted to acknowledge luck; the chance and benevolence of it in my life, and the brutality of it in the lives of others, who might not be allowed the good fortune of a lifetime to correct it.
Mr Forrester went on: Paul took advantage of what life offered him, and while personally reluctant to acknowledge that he was doing anything special, he forever changed the lives of many with his generosity, humour, and humanness.
His legacy lives on in the charities he supported and the Hole in the Wall Camps, for which he cared so much.
We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person.
Newman was born in the Cleveland, Ohio, suburb of Shaker Heights. He briefly attended Ohio University before joining the US Navy, where he served as a radio operator and gunner in torpedo bombers in World War II.
After the war ended, he returned to college and graduated in 1949, when he enrolled at Yale University to study acting and subsequently joined Lee Strasbergs Actors Studio in New York City.
Newman made his debut on Broadway and starred in his first movie in 1954 when he played boxer Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me, later followed by Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Elizabeth Taylor.
His films The Hustler, in 1961, Harper in 1966 and Cool Hand Luke in 1967 made him a global superstar.
Newman teamed up with fellow actor Robert Redford for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969 and they were reunited for The Sting in 1973.
Newman was twice married. He wed Jackie Witte in 1949 and the marriage ended in 1958. The couple had a son and two daughters. In 1978, his son Scott died of a drug overdose and the star opened the Scott Newman Centre for drug rehabilitation.
In 1958, Newman married actress and fellow Oscar-winner Joanne Woodward and they had three daughters together.
The couple had one of Hollywoods rare long-term marriages. Asked if he had ever been tempted to stray, Newman told Playboy magazine: I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger?.
Newman and Woodward appeared in The Long Hot Summer, and he directed his wife in several films, including Rachel, Rachel and The Glass Menagerie.
